    Help with laptop dvd drive

    Hi Guys

    Hope you can help.

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-K415S about a month old, has been working fine.

This morning I've tried a couple of cd's (1xmusic 1xWindows Movie Film) in the DVD drive and it whirrs and clicks away but nothing happens. I've also tried a PC game cd but it doesn't recognise that either.

I go into My Computer and then DVD-RW Drive (F: ) but the folder is empty.

Any idea what the problem is? It's played discs with no problems before

It does however play DVD's with no problems..

First of all, Welcome to the forum spook!

Are you saying the DVD drive was working at one time and then just stopped?.
Have you recently added any software that could be causing a conflict?.
Take a look in Device Manager to see if anything is showing there: Right click on 'My Computer', select 'Properties', select 'Hardware' and then select 'Device Manager'. Your looking for any error signs that appear next to the DVD drive.

This should give us a clue as to what is going wrong .

Yep dvd drive worked fine (as I say the laptop is just over a month old).

I hadn't used the drive for anything for a couple of weeks, then today tried it and noticed the problems.

The only software I've installed was the Ultrawipe and the other cleaner recommended elsewhere on this forum. I'd not used the drive for sometime before those were installed. As a precaution I've uninstalled both programs. I've also done a system restore but to no effect.

Device Manager states that the item is running properly. I've tried updating the driver but I have the most up to date.

And thanks for the welcome :-)

It looks like you might have removed something from your registry with the two utilities you used spook.
The only thing i can think of at the moment is doing a repair install. Follow the instructions Here to perform a repair install. You won't loose any files or programs but you will loose any updates from Microsoft so you'll need to go back and reinstall them

Try rolling back the driver, or you can try doing a hardware diagnostics on it.

Thanks for the replies guys - I'll try what you suggested Vidster when I can find my xp disc - we're in the middle of decorating so it's on the backburner at the mo but will have a go before the w/end.

I did a hardware diagnostic but that doesn't show anything wrong.

I'll let you know how I get on.

ok now I'm panicking! I've done a repair using the VAIO recovery system but the problem is still the same :bawling:

This places your system back to how it was when you start the computer for the first time.

    Any other ideas?

    Hi there,

I have a VAIO pcv-rx 540 desktop, so I know the pain of VAIO computers

Ok, firstly, Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Classic View -> System -> Hardware.

Click on the "Device Manage" tab. Double-click "DVD/CD-ROM Drives" and then double click the drive. It'll take a couple of seconds to popup. Now, is the device enabled? Are there any warnings? If so, stop. If it's not enabled, enable it, and reboot. (I know, you said you can play DVDs... long story, but I learn the hard way it'll work partially when disabled). Next, click on the "Driver" tab, click Roll Back Driver... follow the prompts, reboot, and see if it works. If it still doesn't work, go back to the same window you were in before, and click on Un-install driver. Then, re-install it. If it still doesn't work, contact Sony's tech-support.

    Hope this helps,
    Christian

Just as an update - tried all your suggestions with a negative result. I phoned Sony support who suggested uninstalling the disc drive and then rebooting which I did with a negative result. I downladed the latest drivers again with a neg result  , sooooooo

laptop has now gone to France courtesy of DHL for the boffins to have a look at :bawling:
