"300" Mbs is quite normal as previously mentioned. XP will progressively use more Ram until you exceed 512. After 512, you will note that XP no longer "gouges" you for available ram. @ 1GB. the usage will remain the same at or about 300mbs.

Have a read of the following link, chopper. There are a lot of services that can be disabled in XP. However, please pay particular attention to their dependencies : -

I only have 256 Mb ram in my computer ant i get about 120 free. Shutting off services is one way to reduce the amount of memory being used. The programs you install that run the background it one of the biggest memory killers there is! Shout off all the programs that you don't need running all the time or if you can use alternative programs that aren't so big. For example, instead of running Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, and AIM all at once, use an Instance Messanger that can connect to them all. These programs are usually smaller then anyone of the other messengers. There all kind of things that you can do like that. If I were you and I had all that memory, I probably wouldn';t worry about it much unless it is really slowing down your computer.

Echoing what Craig said, cutting down on taskbar apps is a good idea, another smart way to go, is to run a program like Ad-Aware, you might have spyware on your computer, which is using memory / cpu cycles.

I'm running on 512 MB ram, and a 3.0HT cpu...
currently 46 processes (including Trillian, antivirus firewall, audi/video drivers, IIS, php, and MySQL) it's using 365MB of Ram and ~4% cpu usage.
