Exclamation Sound not working in Vista

I used to have Windows XP on my PC and my sound worked fine. Then I installed Vista and I tried to Overclock it, but it kept making my PC restart (I failed, haha) so then I just reset everything in my BIOS to the original default so my computer can run Vista normally.

When I tried to use my speakers now, even my headphones, they don't work. I checked the Sound in the Control Panel and it says my Digital Output Device is working, however, where it says Speakers and Headphones, they both show Not Plugged In. I then checked my Device Manager and there are no Exclamation marks by my Sound. I also tried to check if there was an update for the driver, but it's up to date. What can I do to remedy this? Thanks!

Vista can be a real pain with microphones (I had many initial problems getting them to reliably work at will - front panel (FP), back panel (BP), or bluetooth mic - "Creative Soundblaster").

Speakers should generally be mostly straight forward with minor adjustment issues. When FP was active, it was not always initially apparent how to (re)enable the BP. Later, there was an ongoing issue with another family member who insisted on using the FP while I expecting to use the BP or bluetooth.

Do you have an onboard sound card or an add-on card such as "Creative Soundblaster"? May also be useful to add that sound card by EXACT name to the search terms below (in double quotes).

Perhaps the following links (first 10-20) can help narrow down your issues:

SPEAKERS ONLY: vista muted Speakers -Headphones "Not Plugged In" - Google Search
BOTH: vista Speakers and Headphones "Not Plugged In" - Google Search

It's onboard. I checked the BIOS, and here's how it's configured:

    Onboard Devices Configuration
    >High Definition Audio
    >>Front Panel Type
    >>>AC 97
    >>>HD Audio

HD Audio is the one selected. I tried to select AC 97 and saved it, then when the computer started up I tried the sound again, and still no sound =\

In 'Device manager'>'Sound, video and game controllers',

I find an entry 'Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio' on my PC.

Other listed items with some of the following terms such as codec, drivers, or device(s) are generally not possible (seachable) names for your sound card MAKE/MODEL.

    If the above doesn't help,

run the following scan and post a link to it:

On my Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers > it just has: High Definition Audio Device.

There may be a 'sleep fix' for that seemingly generic device (driver) provided by Microsoft (or other related MS hardware updates)?? (see 1st 10 links for suggestions):

    Microsoft Update

vista "High Definition Audio Device" resolved fix - Google Search

ASUS Specific Search: add [ASUS] to your search terms above, if needed

Hey I have the same exact problem, although I am not running vista but win7. My SupremeFX-XFi card suddenly wasn't recognized by windows. I've tried almost everything (except reinstalling windows 7).

Unfortunately i cannot post images now, but the 'Sound Device' section shows this:
    Sound Devices:

    1. Philips SPC530NC PC Camera; Audio (Microphone)
    2. Line 6 TonePort GX -->I use this for recording guitar
    3. ATI High Definition Audio Device --->This is just from the GFX card

    Thnx in advance
