Computer slows down when I insert CD

    Hey guys, me again.

My dad recently asked me to make him a copy of a CD. Inside the CD are a bunch of Track1.cda and so on. But everytime I stick it in, my computer slows down up to a point when I can only move my mouse, and everything is not responding.

However, at this point, when I take it out, everything speeds up.

I've managed to copy and paste the .cda's into my Desktop, but I can't find out how to convert it to .mp3.

How would I go about with making a copy of this CD? I can't rip the music because my programs always crash, and I don't know how to convert the .cda.

    Thanks <3

I'm running Windows XP. My drive works, because I recently installed Mass Effect.

Unfortunatly you can't just convert the files that you copied from the disk because since the disk is encrypted they wouldn't have copied correctly. Have you tried other CDs in the drive? Is the disk damaged or scratched? Does it work in other computers? If so rip it from that one, get a USB drive (or something large anough to hold it) and move it to your computer from that.

I was going to try that when my friend comes over with his laptop.

In the meantime, is there anything else I could try?

I've tried putting in other CD's, and it reads them perfectly fine. The disc is abit scratched, but I don't think it's anything major.

That said the only other thing I can think of is to try it in another computer. Scratches can cause a computer to have a lot of trouble reading a cd and I find that it will basically halt everything else until it determines that it can read the disk. I don't know why it does this. If you have a desktop you can try buying an internal drive or an external drive for either a desktop of laptop. They aren't that much from newegg.
