OK so i just got a laptop for free and i plugged it in to charge and noticed the indicator light on the laptop wasn't on. i then tried to turn the laptop on and nothing happened. so i left it plugged in thinking is was just super dead but i came back about a half hour later and i smelt a burning smell. i unplugged it and let it cool then plugged it back in after blowing out the hole. the same thing happened. the light on the charger box thing comes on and that's it. someone told me to wiggle the plug and see if the light flashes and i did not. now im in a total stage of confusion. i im not a computer smart person so if someone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

What is the exact make and model?

Must be a label on it somewhere.

If you smell burning stop trying to use it.

Might be a reason it was free.

it worked when they last used it. its a compaq presario 700. if you need more numbers let me know there is a couple stickers.

Try removing the battery and using the AC adapter.

nothing happened

You might try and find a friend with a similar AC/DC adapter.

They vary on voltage and most are adjustable.

All the ID's you listed above received no reply from HP/Compaq unfortunately.

Also unfortunately burning smells are mot very optimistic.

Many possibilities.

If the issue persists with the battery removed I would question the adapter first.

Again i would hope to get an ID on the laptop.

HP/Compaq has a good troubleshooting section but you need to ID the laptop.

There are many possible clues as to which lights go on and which do not.
