star up problem
Hello, I will try to explain what happened the best I can. I went over to my friend's house to see if his computer can be updated (Hardware..memory,..et) So, what did was click on his yellow shield to update the Microsoft web site. After it download, it tell me to reboot. I rebooted and things looked normal at the time. I told him that his computer can't be updated if any (memory at least). He has a Gateway, Penium III, 128MB RAM, 80GB IDIE connector.
So,..we talked about me just building him a dual-core for his wife/kid to use for email and things. Not, for gaming. I then left and he calls me to tell me that his computer had an error on it that said, something like, a memory dump and now, the computer's light is orange and don't turn on the monitor. He told me that how they turned their computer on was, first turn on the monitor then they would trun the computer on. He told me that after turning on the monitor and then computer the light would be green not orange.
So, I bought the computer back home with me and tried both of my monitors but, the light on the computer is orange instead of green (I don't know if the color means a whole or not?). Could it be a odd thing or bad timing and the onboard video took a poop? He thinks it has something to do with the update by Microsoft. Thoughts?

the monitor is not getting a signal feed from the gfx chip, have you tried booting in safe mode?
-
Actually, no. Will it even boot to safe mode even tho the monitor isn't getting a signal?
-
Here is an update. I plugged the computer back in and at the start up there were 2 quick beeps followed by 1 beep. Then I restarted it and it told me no HD found, then no CD-ROM found....powered it back down and then nothing again.

What is the make & model of the computer?
-
PC Hell: BIOS Error Beep Codes
Try looking at that link, it will tell you what the beeps mean. you should be able to get an idea if its a harware failure then
-
It could be memory/video or even MB. As far as what the make/model is...Gateway, Flexatxstc bro essential 866

I can't find anything on that specific model (could you find a model number) but that code seems to indicat graphics failure so he will need to get a graphics card.
You should open it up and, if it is removable, check for burst bulging or leaking capacitors. Where there any pops or funny smells? That isn't necessarily the only cause of your problem. You also need to try and figure out what kind of slot that you have. I couldn't find out but considering the age it is probably AGP but check this out. It undoubtably has PCI slots but it would be better to use AGP if it has it. If it has PCI-express that would be even better. Study the pictures. I wish I had better news but it could be worse.
