    Power Supply Random Boots

I just built a computer it's an ASUS m4n78 pro motherboard and it's got a AMD Phenom x4 9600 chip and I got a Thermaltake ruby orb cpu fan. I just did a fresh install of windows and all the normal stuff but my BIOS was so slow to boot up so I checked ASUS website and it said there was 3 or 4 available so I updated it with ASUS Flash. The computer said it needed to be restarted so I did and then it turned on and restarted for like a half a sec and then shut off so I thought I blew the power supply.

So took everything out piece by piece to test it and sure enough everything worked just fine after unplugging the power supply from the wall and then plugging it back in. But now sometimes and it's random the computer just won't turn on it will just sit there no power until I unplug the power supply from it and wait about 5 minutes then plug it back in. I've never had one do this before so I think it's not enough to run my system it's a 450 watt.

I also have an Nvidia Geforce Alpha Dog 512 video card but it ran fine in my other system and when this all happened this was my setup:
    1 sata wd 500gb connected to sata1
    1 sata 22x DVDRwDL connected to sata2
    Nvidia Alpha Dog 512
    Ruby orb cpu fan
    120mm Case Fan with LED
    92mm Case Fan with LED
    Wireless Network card

I calculated how much psu I would need and according the calc it says 340w so I should be fine but what is going on?

correction I also I had another 500gb My book and a USB 2.0 hub with 4 ports and 3 in use and an Xbox 360 Wireless receiver plugged in.

Not sure what calculator you used, but below is my canned text on sizing up your demands.

Did you use TIM? Are you sure you don't have any extra stand-offs under the motherboard?

I did use thermal paste a lot of it well all that came with it and I'm pretty sure there are no extra stand offs there is 9 holding the board which is what the book says.

when you have 2 satas you don't need to run them in a RAID configuration do you? one is my hard drive and one is my burner they can't be run in RAID can they.

You do not need to run 2 drives of any kind in an array. In fact a RAID is only for 2 or more hard drives.

Setting up thermal paste is tricky and there is such a thing as too much [see the link digerati referred you to]. If you are suspecting heat if you can get your computer going you might want to go into BIOS and find the temperature readings.

What I think is that your computer is too new to have these kinds of problems.

Let me get this correct and please tell me if I'm wrong as this is important: did you flash your motherboard with a BIOS update? If so something might have gone wrong with that and an incorrect or unsuccessful BIOS flash could totally mess up the motherboard. If your problems didn't start until after that then I would suspect that something went wrong with that. You might consider returning the motherboard or at least contacting Asus' technical support.

Yeah I have everest and it says my cpu is 29C so I don't think it's too hot but to answer your question yes it started after flashing the BIOS. But the reason I flashed was because POST was so slow were talking almost like 3 minutes. That is crazy I had an old 500MHz processor and the most it POSTed was 1min 38sec. so I read about the new BIOS update which made POST faster because it supported new chips I suppose I think I read that anyway I can't remember but what I think is I flashed the wrong one probobaly.

according to ASUS I had 0608 there was 0615 which supported newer chips and then 0715 which supported DTS which at the time didn't know it was surround sound there was no info.
so can I flash back to 0608 and then flash to 0615?

(just a thought it said BIOS flash successful there were no problems during the flash)

also I just thought about this, when the computer doesn't power on my motherboard light is still on it's just when I push the power button it doesn't turn on.

That sounds bad! Very bad. Did you read my sticky? Too much is counterproductive!
and I'm pretty sure there are no extra stand offs there is 9 holding the board which is what the book says.
I would want to be completely sure, not pretty sure. Cases are designed to support 1000s of motherboards of various (within ATX limits) shapes and sizes. There are always more mounting holes in the case than there are corresponding holes in the motherboard.

also I just thought about this, when the computer doesn't power on my motherboard light is still on it's just when I push the power button it doesn't turn on.
The motherboard LED only signifies the PSU is putting out the required +5Vsb standby voltages required by ATX standards whenever the PSU is plugged in. It does not mean the +12V or +3.3V are good.

I wouldn't worry about reversing the flash but to just contact technical support and do an RMA. It sounds like you have been having problems from the get go and therefore it might have come to you bad in the first place.

but it still works now I'm on it right now just sometimes it doesn't so you think it was bad when it came to me?

Its possible considering it shouldn't have been taking 3 minutes to boot in the first place. If it is barely working now it could get worse later and just your luck it could totally dieafter your warranty expires. The point is that it isn't consistent and it isn't reliable. Take advantage of the warranty after all you paid for it.
