ok, I am using a Toshiba Satellite 5205-S705. When I turn it on, it shows the Toshiba logo, then goes to a screen saying that windows did not shut down properly and asks if I want to start as normal, safe mode..ect..ect I have tried all the choices, and if I choose to run normally, it freezes on that screen. If I choose from the other choices, it will either go to a black screen, or go through like, a driver check and stop when it gets to "atisgkaf.sys" and will not go any farther. I have tried booting with Disc, resetting the ram, and other simple things like that. And also, when I go into BIOS, the only options in that, is to set the time, and and set a password. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

Hi, sounds like it would be a good idea to run chkdsk /r to see if there is any file system corruption. Do you have a XP install CD? If not, download and create a bootable CD from the .iso file here: XP Recovery Console

You don't burn the iso file itself to CD., you create a CD from the iso file using your CD burning software. There is a good freeware burner called DeepBurner which will do this. Another called ISO Recorder is also very easy to use.

Boot the CD (XP install or the one you just made) and at the first opportunity, enter R to start the Recovery Console.
Next, choose which XP installation you want to login to. Normally this will be 1.
Lastly you will be asked for the Administrator password. Just press the Enter key as the Administrator does not have a password (unless you gave it one, then you would enter it).

From the command prompt, enter: chkdsk c: /r

Allow it to complete undisturbed. It can take quite a while depending on the size of the hard drive.

I did what you said, but it will not boot from disc. It still goes the same screen.

Do you have the XP disk? If so you can use the recovery console there. You need to go into the BIOS like you did before and set the 1st device to be you optical drive. If you can get to the recovery console one thing that you can do is to type in sfc /scannow. [no period] For this scan windows might need your windows disk so it is best to use that.

I tried to go into BIOS and prioritize the boot options, but when I go into BOIS, there aren't any choices. There is no system info or anything, there is only a time and date, and register or unregister password. And at the top right corner it says, "ACPI BIOS version = 1.30". So I am unable to get past that one options screen to run a sys restore or anything.

Try F12 on start to access the Boot Menu.

Here set the disk (CD-ROM) to boot.

I am having a problem with a HP Pavilion zv5000. I first had the problem with the DC jack being loose, so I got inside of it and fixed that. But then after that, the screen wouldn't come on, it seemed to be running though. so I attached an external monitor and still no picture. So I looked up what I should do, and was told I needed a new motherboard, so I bought a new one and put it in, but the same problem persists, no picture on the screen. any ideas?

ok, I did that and it sits at a black screen for a little while then goes to that one options screen again.

It should say "hit any key to enter setup" [or something like that]. I just doesn't boot automatically into the disk.

Is this the same laptop? Are you saying you changed the mobo in a laptop?

Are you the same person trying to sell this on Craigslist? (just curious).
