amend: prob w/A: drive after r/r
Since 1st coming to d-a-l for comp help I c there are a few things I left off my post (problem w/ A drive after remov / replace under me questions) my unit is a 550 mhz pentium based ibm clone type 15gig hd, (old I kno/ but has orig material I would like to keep)as I removed and replaced the A drive with another oldie I found I had interrupted the balance of things as it were, Anyway I have had norton rescue disks prepared for years and this is 1st time to use them so here I am running rescue and find a check mark in the "boot log" and click enter to restore, The screen now shows that it is restoring boot log from "A" drive "restoring boot log" see the thing is it's been gowing on for 4 days now. Does anyone think this has gone on long enough? or should I continue to be patient and wait for the day when I will check on it and find the screen saying " boot log restored ok to reboot y/n" something like this ,
also what does it mean when dos prompt sez "A:/ rshell" ? what is r shell ?, thaks jim

I wouldn't wait any longer Jim - it's not doing anything.
Are you sure that it's the boot log that you're trying to restore and not the boot sector or boot partition? The boot log is simply a text file recording all of the actions that the PC did whlist booting up - it's used for diagnosing boot problems so that you can see the last thing the PC did before it crashed. Restoring one that's 4 years old off of a floppy will be of no use to you at all.

Thanks for your reply dj, have you also read my thread under the windows ME ?
This has all come about because I tried to swap A drive mechanism in the machine and to my surprise I get nothing but dos and using the norton rescue disks are all I have. I have down loaded and saved to disk the windows ME from bootdisk.com (oem and alt 1, 2) and dont kno how I am going to use those yet, I read others threads posted saying they were having trouble using them.
I believe my A drive is working after all it is using the drive to read the disks for rescueand the rescue has determined that of the 3 possible errors involved 1 check mark was necessary ( boot record) I hit enter and another "blue box" has opened over the other previous that sez: restoring rescue data from A:/ "boot record info" for 6 days now, So I believe you are correct when you say "It's not doing anything" ,No activity present at the little green lite on the A drive mech for now like earlier when started, thanks again for reply, let me kno if you have further thoughts on the matter, Jim
