    LAN problems

    Hi

I bought a new comp, with onboard LAN card and tried to access the internet. Its takeing a few minutes (aprox.5 and more) to open my homepage and most of times it doesnt even open. Even when i start up my comp, it takes a few minutes to acquire address (it shuld take 2-3 seconds, at least with my old comp did). When i check the ipconfig/all , it looks ok. I have set to obtain IP and DNS address automatically and i also insert all addresses manualy. I have instaled drivers from original cd, then i have downloaded new drivers from official site and didnt help. I reinstaled OS didnt help. I connected the old comp to the same cable and its working excellent. Then i created a home network and i somehow managed to acces the new comp but it took me 5-10 minutes. I disabled onboard lan card in bios, restart and enable it again. In device manager is showing that network adapter is working ok. At last i've even update BIOS from official site, but doesnt help. My LAN status is showing "connected" but sped is like 1b/s. I cant access even from "Express Gate" that my motherboard suports; which is linux based app.,created to access network without starting OS.
    Any ideas?!?

Motherboard: asus m4a78 (network adapter realtek rtl 8168/8111 pci-e gigabit ethernet nic)
Procesor: amd phenom II X4 940 (3.0 GHz)
Ram: 4 GB (3.01GB detected with XP)
OS: WIN XP 32bit SP3 (tried also vista x64)

    Please, pretty please, help!

    I bought a new comp...
When? If this is brand new, consider taking it back. It sounds like the on-board network device is not working correctly. I know you swapped out computers, but I try a different cable - those $.25 cables HW makers toss in are made with cheap materials and inferior assembly techniques.

Are you using a router? Have you reset it? Did you configure your firewall for your network?

    Hi
    Thanx for quick reply.
Yes, its brand new, 3 days old. I tried 3 different cables and do not use router, just modem from my ISP with 4 LAN ports, not firewalled ( smart-com svm104) approx. 2 years old. I' ve tried al ports. I did unplug it from power suply for about 10min and tried again. I had many times before 2 or 3 different computers connected at this modem at the same time and had no problems. Even now i have two computers conected through this modem and they work ok. Tried to establish network with only new comp connected to modem, then tried with old and new connected at the same time. I even uninstaled antivirus and turn off windows firewall (it's the only firewall). Is it possible that the new LAN card communicates with modem on a different way than the old ones, or something? Onboard lan card is max. 1 Gbit and modem is probably 100Mbit, does that matters. I'm totaly lost.

The Smartcom SVM104 if this, is a multi-function network device that includes a modem, 4-port Ethernet switch, and a router. So when you attach your computer, you are connecting to the switch. It is communicates with the router, which is connected to the gateway (the modem), and then out to the world.

If you open a command prompt and enter ipconfig /all, it should look almost the same as your computers, except their IP address will be something like 192.168.1.101, or 102. This computer should also be 192.168.1.1xx - if the 1st 3 octets are different, the computer will not communicate with your network (everything on your side of the router). Enter ipconfig /release and ipconfig /flushdns then enter exit (entering ipconfig /? will show all the commands and how to use them. Then shut down windows and unplug the computer from the wall. Reboot the modem and see if you can log in with the other computers. If you can, power up this computer and see if it finds the network this time.

I succeeded. In properties of my network adapter i had to change option for "speed and duplex" from selfnegotiation to 10Mb/s full duplex. Dont know how does that matters, but now internet is working ok. It appears that 1Gb/s Lan card doesnt work ok with my modem. And, yes, my multi-function network device looks exactly like the one you found; even isp provider label at top.

    Thanx for effort.
