I have an asus m2n en sli motherboard with built in sound card and one day the sound just packed up. For instance, if i open windows media player i get an error message saying no playback because there is a problem with the sound device. However, the sound did work when i opened the control panel for the sound and tested it on my headphones there was sound and when i play WOW it worked aswell.
But still, i got a new sound card anyway and fixed it to the motherboard, installed it, tested it and it works. However, there is still no sound and still that error message when i go to play songs in WMP comes up. I cant listen to anything, not on the internet nothing. Is there a problem with the motherboard or something?
Can someone please help me with this its a big problem for me.
We need some more information. What version of Windows? Have you scanned for malware? So all system sounds work, but program audio does not?
Ok you have XP but what version of media player do you have? Have you confirmed that your sound card is the default device? You might want to go into the BIOS and disable on board sound.
This is similar to a PC that I had fixed before.
But the problem is not the sound card but the LAN card, onboard LAN card did not work even installed the latest driver. Used other PCI Lan card, still the same.
So I reinstalled the latest chipset driver for the mainboard and reboot PC, then installed the LAN driver again, works!
Maybe you can try this.
Also, try download the latest version WMP. or use system restore get back to the date that the sound works on the WMP.
Hope this helps!

Yes I'm running XP, i have the latest version of WMP (11), but yes it is a weird problem because when i go into the control panel and test the card it works, but it doesnt anywhere else.
Bill, my LAN card works fine though its just the sound that doesn't work. If i've misunderstood what you meant can you explain it please because i don't know how to do what you've said. And how do i access the bios?
Thanks for your help
Hi kizaard,
You are welcomed!
I used the LAN card as an example.
For now, you can visit the Asus mainboard website and download the latest chipset driver fro your mobo, install that driver and must reboot to take effect, then reinstall the latest sound card driver as well.
To access the Bio, you will need to press F1 or Delete key when the PC just been powered on.
From the pop up menu, select "reset to the default setting" or some similar option like that.
If still the same problem, try use system restore.
After all these still the same error, you may consider backup data and reinstall the XP.
Hope this helps!

Thank you very much ill get straight onto it, i just updated the bios and that didnt do anything. But im going to try all you just said and i'll report the reults once im done. Thanks again
Im on the Asus website and have found the chipset download section for my motherboard but the only download they have is a NVIDIA nForce chipset driver download.
Isn't that to do with graphics? Just making sure im downloading the right thing.
I've done all of that and still nothing. My system restore only goes back to march this year and my computer sound hasnt been working for about 6 months so that wont work anyway. and i dont have the CD for XP anymore either. This is really annoying as i need my sound does anyone have any suggestions?
its not as if the sound doesnt work, it does as i said earlier just not on anything else apart from World of Warcraft and the control panel for the actual sound card which is really weird isnt it?
Any other help is appreciated.
try download the latest version WMPI think what [that other -have the latest version of WMP (11)] Bill meant, or was driving at is maybe installing (or reinstalling) the latest version will reset whatever setting is screwed up. I would probably recommend uninstalling WMP11, get it going with WMP10 (or whatever version you had on there last), then reinstalling WMP11.
