My systems motherboard is INTEL 82915G/GV/910GL and i've 80GB sata internal HDD rite now.. can i extend my HDD with this seagate???

    Thanks in advance...

It is most likely the hard drive inside the external enclosure is a standard hard drive. What we don't know is if it is IDE or SATA drive. You will need to remove the drive and see. Then see if your computer case will support another drive. Then find a spare drive data connection, and power connection. Make sure any jumpers are set correctly, then you should be good to go. But this does not "extend" your hard drive, it simply adds another drive to your computer.

    Thanks Digerati,

    Sorry for the late reply...

Yeah, i opened the enclosure and i found the HDD inside is SATA(Seagate 500GB HDD).
Can i include it into my system? will it bring any damage to my machine? My internal HDD is also a SATA 80Gb HDD...

    Thanks for the reply...

As long as there is a drive bay to slide the drive into, and a spare power lead from the PSU to power it, then you should be able to easily connect it to the motherboard as most motherboards have at least 2 (often 6 or more) SATA connections. You will then need to boot into the BIOS Setup Menu and make sure the drive is detected, then Save and Exit. From there, it should appear in Windows under My Computer.

While digging around inside the computer case, make sure you unplug the computer from the wall, and that you touch bare metal before reaching in, and often while in there to keep any static from building up in your body.

    Hi Digerati,

Thanks again for ur guidance. I have successfully connected my external HDD into my system and it works fine. As u said it works as another drive.

One more query, can i split or portion the added external drive? If so will it possible to do that with the data inside??? or Any software can do that like partition magic for windows???

    Thanks for helping me.....

That's one of the primary features of Partition Magic. The free EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition works well for that too.

    boot to external hard drive

Yes you can - but I would not unless using an eSATA connection. USB is just not that reliable, IMO. That said, many do, and are happy with that setup. Perhaps with USB3.0 FINALLY finalized, it will prove to be as universally reliable for everyone as USB2.0 was supposed to be.

    Thanks Digerati,

Actually i've connected my external drive into my motherboard's sata adapter(SATA 1, secondary) interanally so i am not using USB connection.( My 80Gb internal HDD is connected to SATA 0 and working as primary). My question is if i connect my external HDD 500GB to SATA 0 port will it act as primary? can i able to format the data and install the win xp OS on it??? can i make partitions like C:\, D:\, E:\ on that 500GB drive????

    Thanks once again....
