do i need a new motherboard?
Recently I ordered 2 memory modules for my Dell Dimension E521 computer, they were 1gig DDR2-667, which matched the original memory from Dell, the new memory was purchased online from offtek.co.uk. When i installed the memory the computer would not boot up. Consequently I had to move the original memory to the new banks and whilst i was averaging around 1200 free ram, im now at 400mb (based on the freeram xp software which allows you to free up memory).
I can only assume 3 of the banks are broke as when i try to boot up with 1 memory module in each bank alternatively it wont boot bar 1.
Do i need a new motherboard or can the memory bank be replaced?
many thanks in advance guys.

Where in the boot process did it hang? Did you go into the BIOS, make sure all RAM is identified, then save and exit?

It didnt even begin 2 boot, depending on what memory slot was filled, e.g., it wouldnt boot at all nor even power up, or it would make 7 beeps and do nothing bar the fan constantly on. I have 3 modules in now except the dodgy 1, but there not all being recognised. I dont know how to do what you suggested!
Any advice?
Many thanks,

According to this page: Documentation you should not be getting 7 beeps. Perhaps it is 1 long 2 short being repeated.
What do you mean you have 3 in, but not all are recognized? What does it indicate?
You can test RAM using one of the following programs. Both require you to create and boot to a bootable floppy disk or CD to run the diagnostics. Using the floppy method is generally easier (and another reason to include floppy drives in new builds). However, the CD method is just as effective at detecting RAM problems. Allow the diagnostics to run for several passes or even overnight. You should have no reported errors.
Windows Memory Diagnostic - see the easy to follow instructions under Quick Start Information.

Hi, i tried the windows diag. It ran all night and for 160 passes but it said 0 errors. Can the slots the memory modules be replaced without a new motherboard?

No. Well, they can but it would cost more than the motherboard is worth.

Thanks for that. I tried each memory bank again one at a time, starting with the 2 white cliped ones then the 2 black clipped ones. only the last black clipped one would boot the computer with 1gig ram. Is it screwed?!

It does not sound good. I suppose I would reset the BIOS and try one more time. Refer to your motherboard manual on how to do that. It will be moving a jumper, pulling the battery, or pressing a reset button (these are rare).
