    Quicky - Yellow exclamation

    Hi all,

Had problems sorting my new PC out,but mostly fixed now (thanks jeph etc).

Now I've got just 1 yellow exclamation mark in device manager, other devices,USB controller:

My question is, can / should I remove this 'other' usb device, (as the proper one looks to be loaded ok at the bottom of the list)?
I've removed yellow ex's before and it's cured problems, but I've also removed yellow ex's and been left with a blank/black screen..something which I don't want to do again!

Also I've no sound, and was wondering if this yellow ex is causing a conflict.

*edit* I've just unplugged the speaker jack from the back of my tower,(the green hole) and plugged it into an extra 'green hole' lol, on the front of the tower, where there's also extra usb slots..
..and I have sound..double checked it,same. So it must be a faulty rear jack.hmmm.

    Thanks, Dave.

If your USB is working just forget it and leave it alone.

    I agree with Jeff....
If you have some spare time, and you're curious, you can try to identify that device...

    1. Open Device Manager (Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager)
    2. The hardware whose drivers are missing will appear as Unknown device, so it's easier to locate the device.
    3. Right click on the unknown device and click on Properties.
    4. Under the Properties window click on Details tab and select Device Instance Id from the drop down box.
    5. You should see a code similar to this

    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27DC&SUBSYS_30868086
    &REV_01\4&1E46F438&0&40F0

    6. The portion of the code highlighted in RED is the Vendor ID and the portion highlighted in GREEN is the Device ID. In this example:

    Vendor ID = 8086
    Device ID = 27DC

    7. Once you have obtained both the IDs, proceed to PCI Database. There you can either search for the vendor from the vendor ID or directly get information about the device along with the vendor name by searching with the device ID.

    8. Then from there you can go directly to the hardware manufactureres website and get the driver.

    You know,

When you guys put links like that up, it makes me realize how little I know about computing lol.(I am self taught tho..with the great help from people such as your goodselves ..no computers in my schooldays).

    Ok, here's what I've got:
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV4386SUBSYS_blah blah blah
    =
Device chip vendor ID + name
    0x4386 Northbridge 0x1002 ATI

Might as well be chinese to me

It looks like chipset, or on-board video, but why it's listed as USB Controller is beyond me.
As Jeff said, if everything works fine, I'd leave it alone.
At least, we have some idea, what it might be, in case something goes wrong with the computer.

    Hey,guys,

Was just reading hitman47222's post (XP help, windows couldn't start..) and the cure for his sound.
Might be totally way off here, but my sound still only works in the front jack plug, Not the rear / normal one..so I have sound, but a problem with it,somewhere..agreed?

    It's a brand new machine,with no other problem(touch wood).
So, I have a problem with the rear jack/board, regarding the sound, but I don't know what the problem is....
..and, I have a yellow exclamation mark which, with broni's link, leads me to information that looks quite similar to hitmans' problem..which was his sound!

    Here's hitman47222's info..
p.s, sorry hitman if it's copyrighted etc..I just shamelessly , erm, copied it

"okay awesomeeeeeeeeee news ..... yessssssss finally it worked ... for those who have interest :
BIOS > advanced > chipset > south bridge xxxx ( x stands for wierd numbers and letters) > on board audio device > enable

VOILA ... i can hear again!!!"

    and here's my info:
    0x4386 Northbridge 0x1002 ATI

Could there be a connection here? Got to admit, they look similar..

    Cheers, Dave.

His issue was in regards to a PCI sound card which when in use had the BIOS turn off the motherboard audio.

He removed the card then discovered he needed to set the BIOS back to the motherboard audio.

Does your computer have a PCI sound card?
