One is built in, and the other is not!

Okay, I guess you figured that out already. First, there is no such thing as a built in "card" - but everyone calls it that. By built in, what that means is the GPU - graphics processing unit (a CPU dedicated to graphics) and its associated circuitry is mounted on - that is, soldered on, and integrated into the circuity of the motherboard. A video card is a separate piece of hardware and is installed in one of the expansion slots on the motherboard.

In terms of performance, the built-in graphics are generally suited for office work (creating documents, email, and general Internet use). They are often included in entry level motherboards and offer an excellent, affordable solution. Their biggest disadvantage is they do not always come with dedicated RAM and so they "share" (steal) system RAM for the GPU to use.

A card, on the other hand, includes dedicated RAM, and normally have much better (more powerful) GPUs. Cards have 3 main disadvantages: (1) they cost more, (2) they generate more heat, and (3) they can be VERY power hungry.
