Re: Should I get a New Motherboard?

Just read the walkthrough. A nice and easy to understand guide.
In regard to the CPU and the thermal paste I wasnt planning on removing the CPU from the MOBO when I move it to the new case. Will that be a problem?
    Thanks,
    Dan

    No. No problem.

If you have a huge heat sink you'll have to be careful to make sure that its weight doesn't cause damage to the MB. If you think it is large enough to perhaps rip out the CPU and/or mess up the socket it would be safer to remove it. This is because you'll have to position the board in place to figure out where the spacers have to go, move the board out of the way, set up the spacers, and then move the board back in position and screw it down. Thats an awful lot of movement with a heavy heat sink on your board putting pressure on it. Are you following me on that? I know its inconvenient but if the instructions that came with heat sink [or even the processor] suggest that you only put the heat sink on the processor when the board is in the case then I would take that literally and remove it first.

Also only put down enough spacers to match the number of holes on the board and don't put one in every hole on the case. Only those that will be used to hold down the board should be put into the case.

The heat sink insnt that big, it sticks out about 2 inches from the MOBO, I'll have a closer look at it when I remove the MOBO.
I had a really good look in the case yesterday and I noticed the components are rather dusty, any hints on the best/safest way to clean the hardware? Thanks again for all your help. Its really appreciated.
    Regards,

I got my mates compressed air kit and gave the components a go over. Just a note to thoes are going to do this to their own gear...dont do it inside...especially if your girlfriend has heyfever... lets just say that I was in deep when she got home.
Anyway, gave the stuff a good clean up and transfered the hardware from the old case to the new without problem. just a matter of remembering where the cables go
The new case is really good, cooling kicks ass. Dropped the GPU temp 20C. Although the high temp could have just been contributed to the confined space of the old case. But the new case looks pretty and thats what counts
Thanks again for all your help guys its much appreciated.
