black screen nothing boots...but computer turns on
Hi,
Please help me figure this out...I have an Emachines T6414, Windows XP, dont know what motherboard but an ATI video card on the board. I tried to put in more RAM and also cleaned the computer at the same time. When I started the power button lights, cd rom functions, hd light lights up, I hear one beap then some humming, fans run but they keep running at high speed not like normal when the eventually slow down.
The monitor says no signal. The problems also change sometimes I can power down by holding in the power button and sometimes I have to unplug it to turn off.
I was reading your threads and unplugged all cords from motherboard and reinstalled ram and still had same result. I had also took out what I think was the battery (looks like watch battery?) but did not see jumper? I also created a problem when I unplugged the power button from motherboard, there were the little plugs that looked like one. When I unplugged I realized there were three and some pins were not used, so now Im quessing how the went back on.
I know this is a mess, but I cannot afford repairs and I would like to do it on my own if I can figure out what is going on. Emachines does not offer help cause out of warranty.
Thank you so much for your time.

Did you try it with only the old RAM installed?

Hi,
I did take the new ram out. I also figured out my motherboard, I reset the cmos, monitor still says no signal and nothing happening. What next? Any ideas? Power supply seems to be a common culprit..anyway to troubleshoot it?
Thank you

Try removing all the RAM and then power it up.
You should hear a constant beep or continual beeping.
Can you verify that you hear this?

Earlier you said: "I hear one beep then some humming" when you were starting with RAM installed. Can you recreate this?
Point being to verify that the board speaker is working.

I think that was the cd rom. I disconnected the cd roms and fans so i could listen...there was no beeping just clicking and whirring of hard drive.

Do you remember when it was working OK did you hear a beep when you turned it on?
Most (if not all) computers will beep right after you power it on. One beep.
What I am driving at is to determine that your motherboard speaker was working. There is a very tiny speaker on your motherboard or else it is wired to a case speaker. This is not your external computer speakers.
All that being said: if your speaker is working and your motherboard does not beep when started with no RAM installed it almost certainly indicates a problem with the motherboard.
