    Re: PC won't boot

As far as I know, it is a Philips computer. The handbooks are Philips and it says Philips on the front of the case. The DVD is Philips too. It was a reconditioned model. Receipt says:

Philips MT1400 Reconditioned Intel Pentium 4 516 Processor Base Unit

    I have checked all connections.

There is no beep when I start it up.

Have reseated RAM, also swapped the two round in each other's slot.

    Still no luck.

Next started up without RAM. Motherboard makes continuous beep for about 5 seconds, stops and then repeats.

Haven't tried clearing the CMOS yet. Will try that next.

    Thanks again for your help.

Right. Now I at least know it exists:

    Philips MT1400 - Google Search

At least the motherboard sounds good. That BEEP is a healthy sign. On a normal boot up it should beep once quick. Did you ever notice this before?

Also try with just one stick of RAM and then switch them just in case the RAM has been damaged.

Yes it used to do one quick beep on start up.

Tried one RAM at a time. Still no luck.

Will try the CMOS now. Haven't spotted where the jumpers for that are yet. Will check your diagram.

Right, I have done as you suggested re the CMOS. Now when I start the computer the same thing happens but the fan on the back keeps going now, whereas before it only went briefly and then stopped.

Also now when I go to turn the computer off, I have to press the button for a while before turn off. Before it stopped straight away. Don't know whether this has any baring.

Thanks for the support. We are all volunteers but the server needs to be fed.

Usually the power button needs to be held for 3-5 seconds in order to shut down.

This and the fan thing indicate a power problem.

    I will ponder some more.

If you get it into Windows again please use the scan at the top of the forum and post back the link to your results.

    So it's running again.

That board does have a newer BIOS but you'd want a stable on/off pattern prior to flashing the BIOS.

Just a few other questions: What is the wattage on the PSU? What was the wattage on the original one?

I don't suppose you got a Philips PSU? Was the original labeled as Philips?
