Keyboard Problem – Some keys don’t respond

  1. Keyboard Problem – Some keys don’t respond

A few days ago some of the keys of my desktop’s keyboard suddenly stopped working. I tried reinstalling keyboard drivers, disconnecting and reconnecting another keyboard, even executing a system restore, nothing work. I even tried another USB keyboard, there was not change. Some of the keys that do not work are:

    -Left Control
    -Delete
-5 and 6 (in letter pad)
    -“-“ (in letter pad)

    Please help!

    That is strange.

Does it matter what program you are using? For example Word Pad or email or forums like this?

    Does Ctrl+Alt+Delete work? Or Ctrl+ESC?

    Does the Windows key work?

Assuming that your BIOS Setup is accessed via "Press Delete" are you able to enter your BIOS Setup?

  3. Re: Keyboard Problem – Some keys don’t respond

Weirdest thing happened. I tried accessing the bios with “delete” as you suggested (in my computer, the bios can be access in two different modes with “delete” or “tab”) and it didn’t work. So, I used tab to access the bios and tried using F1, which was another one of the keys that wasn’t originally working. It didn’t do anything. So I restart my computer and press delete again, just to be sure it wasn’t working. Somehow it worked. So, I quitted the bios, discarded any changes, and continued to with the windows start up process. Once inside windows, everything is working. Don’t know why or how, but everything is fixed. Thanks!

    Wow! BIOS Ghosts!

  5. Re: Keyboard Problem – Some keys don’t respond

It returned I trying doing the same trick and it doesn't work. I did notice that if press the keys that don't work many times, they start to function momentarily. Any ideas?

  6. Re: Keyboard Problem – Some keys don’t respond

Well from the previous I figured it was a BIOS issue. The more I thought about it it made more sense.

The keyboard is one of the first pieces of hardware the BIOS starts.

When you boot do all three lights on the keyboard flash? That would be the CAP Lock NUM Lock SCROLL Lock.

I assume you never get a BIOS keyboard error?

Is you BIOS set to Defaults? Including error reporting? There is usually a setting by Default that says: "STOP on error: Press F1 to continue". If this is OFF then the error would not be reported and also pressing F1, if functional, would simply load with the error.

Do you know if your BIOS has an update?

  7. Re: Keyboard Problem – Some keys don’t respond

When I boot up, none of the keys light up. My BIOS is not set to default, I have a RAID set up and therefore some of the settings are altered. My BIOS is not updated, but it is not because I haven’t tried. Every time I tried to update, the Asus website disconnects me. I will try updating one more time.

  8. Re: Keyboard Problem – Some keys don’t respond

    Hello,

I have exactly the same problem. Exactly same buttons do not work. Sometimes they start working, but rarely. Although I can access bios by clicking DEL almost everytime. I even tried setting up bios to default, no changes. Please help!
