    Boot up problem

    XP SP2
    Mobo ASUS P5K SE/EPU
    CPU Core2Duo E8400 3GHz
    Ram 4Gb DDR2 800
    HDD SATA2 160 Gb
    Graphics ATI HD4850 PCI express
    PSU Corsair 520W

    Hi

My son is having a problem with his PC on boot up. It has been working fine since I built it about 4 months ago.
It doesn't always boot up immediately when he switches it on. It can take a few restarts to a lot of restarts before it runs. Once running it works fine. When it doesn't boot up there is no beep, the CPU fan runs for a short time then stops. On pressing the restart button this fan will run until you take your finger off the button.
I checked all the wiring in case something was loose.
I swopped the CPU and memory but no difference. I removed the battery from the board and refitted it but no change.
I haven't yet had a chance to swop the graphics card or psu but I'm thinking motherboard issue.
    Any help much appreciated.

From your description, you've checked the obvious first. Cables/connections etc.

Something to try is a bare bones POST. See my Post # 8 here: http://www.d-a-l.com/help/general-ha...tastrophe.html

Eliminate the P.S. from the equation. It could be capacitors going bad in the P.S. unit.

If you don't have a "spare" compatable P.S. that you can swap out, I'd invest in a P.S. tester available at most computer stores. There's cheap (some LEDS only) then there's a bit more expensive. If you dabble in computer tinkering/building, get the better tester. Even if the P.S. is good, it's a handy tool to have in your computer tool collection.

Post back with your results and any further questions.

    Hi Dan

Had to wait until my son went away for a couple of days to get my hands on his PC.

I stripped it back to the barebones, CPU, video card, one stick of memory and PSU, removing and replacing the battery but still no beep.
I swapped the psu, memory, cpu and video card but still no beeps.
I take it the m/b is faulty then?
