    Boot up problem

    Hello,

I am having a problem with my Asus striker 2 Formula mobo booting up (I think its the mobo).
I upgraded the ram in it and I also blew it out with a can of compressed air, after that it would not boot at all. I tried swapping the ram back to the old sticks to see if that was the problem but it is still the same. My monitor light stays orange like it has no signal.

I plugged in the LCD poster and it stops after the error "DET IDE".
If I hit DELETE to get into the bios it does actually enter it as the display on the LCD poster changes to EN SETUP.

I read another post on this forum that said to try pressing the reset button to see if the monitor will load that way but it still wont, I tried it about 15 times and the monitor wont change to a green led (I also cannot swap connections as my 3d cards are 9800gt's that only have DVI connections).

    PC specs,
    Vista 32 Ultimate
    ASUS Striker II Formula mobo
    Nvidia 9800gt SLI
    4 x 2gb Corsair XMS2 extreme 6400
    Intel Core2Quad Q9300 2.50ghz
    Corsair 1000w PSU
THX Audigy 2 ZS Platinum 7.1ch sound card
    Seagate 500gb SATAII 32M HDD

    Thanks!

    Reseat your graphics card.

Try your old RAM (use just one stick) and Reset the CMOS. Either a rear switch or an on-board jumper.

I downloaded your manual but it will not allow copy/paste.

    Look to section 2.6 Jumper

Section 2 page 27 in what I downloaded.

Do your keyboard lights flash at all?

You say "3D cards": do you have multiple cards?

You post "4 x 2gb" RAM: were you trying to use 8GB of RAM?

Anyway first off reseat the graphics card and clear the CMOS and test with one stick of old RAM.

    Thanks for the reply.

I tried reseating both 3d cards and checking the SLI connection, removing all but 1 ram stick and reseting the CMOS.
I still have the same problem with my monitor displaying nothing

I use a USB keyboard but it does not light up or flash at all (its the logitech G15 and the LCD screen on it does not power up either). It still works tho as I can enter BIOS, I just cant see anything.

    I was running it on 8gb of ddr2 800 but I tried to upgrade it to 8gb ddr2 1066.

I also have 2 video cards running on SLI, both Nvidia 9800GT cards.

The process I would go through is basically rebuilding the system.

That board has LED's for voltage readings by the CPU and RAM and I believe the drives. Check that these are green. The drive is amber if I recall.

I would load only one graphics card or at least remove the SLi bridge as a first step.

Another test would be to try and boot with no RAM and see what error you get.

    Thanks
    I'll try remove the SLI.
All the led's on the mobo are indicating everything is ok.

I also tried removing all the ram and I get 3 short beeps.

I dont understand with the LCD post tester if it stops on the error or just before it.
It goes through the mem and ram test ok and quite a few others including TESTVRAM but the last thing I see on it is IDE DET and then it does 1 long beep and displays ERRORMSG.
If I press delete to enter bios it goes just as far but straight after displaying IDE DET it goes to EN SETUP indicating that it has gone into the bios settings.

Tried to remove the SLI but I still have the exact same problem

I did Google your board and it has a long list of issues. The manual doesn't even refer to ERRORMSG but other users have said it is basically a dead board. Again this is just Googling. Hear say as it were.

    Can you RMA that board?

If everything was OK prior to the RAM change I would have assumed that if the new RAM were incompatible it might have "shocked" the board but clearing the CMOS should have cleared issues.

All that said you should still at least get a flash of recognition on your monitor if the graphics cards were OK.

I've noticed with these chipsets that often the board BIOS kicks in prior to the GPU BIOS which results in the graphics failure. Usually resetting the boot clears this up.

Have you tried the Reset button on the board itself?

I guess I will try get a RMA on the board through the shop I bought it from.
I would maybe just go out and buy another board and not use that type of mobo at all but I am not 100% sure its the problem.

I'll take it in to the place of purchase tomorrow and see what they say.

Thanks again for all your help. I have donated to help show my appreciation for your support.

Let us know how it goes and thank you very much for your support.

We are all volunteers here but the server needs to be fed.

I have a similar setup to yours but a slightly older EVGA 680i chipset with dual 8800GTX and 4GB RAM.

I am just curious, if you care to share, why you were running 8GB RAM? Were you running this as a server?

Anyway thanks again and I will post any additional thoughts if they fly by.

Thanks for all your help, its greatly appreciated.

I am taking the whole pc back to the place I bought the stuff from today so they can test it with a different mobo and check if thats the problem.
I will post back to let you know how it goes.

The main reason I have a lot of ram is for the PhotoShopping and video editing I do.
I also noticed it was a lot quicker for games on my old rig when I went from 2gb to 4gb, so I thought on this I would go all out and get 8gb.

    I'll keep you posted
