Red face New laptop, think GPU is overheating

My computer knowledge is limited at best so bare with me please! I just bought a new laptop (HP G60 notebook) AMD Athlon dual core QL 60 1.9 GHz processor. It has 3G RAM and a GeForce 8200M Graphics card. I am running Vista 32bit premium.

After lowering many settings in attempt to improve performance, I am still running WoW at a slim 2 frames per second at times. I assumed my problem was due to overheating so I purchased a laptop cooling fan. The laptop feels only slightly above room temperature pretty much everywhere. I have tried 2 different temperature monitoring softwares (speedfan and Hmonitor) both with have registered my HDD temperature around 39Celsius and the GPU at 238 degrees Celsius (yes 238). I haven't read of anyone having temperatures anywhere near this high so I have wondered if the sensor is faulty? If anyone has any advice I would love any input. If there is missing information I will try my best to update any unknown details!
    Thanks in advance!

If multiple monitoring software is showing 238 C, which is an error of some sort, I would return this laptop and ask for (Demand) a new one.

Can your GPU actually still run at 238 degrees celsius?!

I have the same GPU (HP G60 also) and I am getting the same reading. It has to be a false reading. The GPU would fry at that temp. I have been struggling to get WoW running at decent framerates myself with this laptop. I am now running it at 50-60 fps after updating DX10 and making sure all my laptop and video settings were set to performance. This includes your power management options also.

Let me know if it works for you

    Hello,

I've recently had this problem and have taken it back to my local PC store and told them about the problems and see what they can do, if the problem continues, demand for a replacement.

    Hope this helps.

Take the heatsink of the cpu and watch it past 238C.

One, this is about a GPU which runs hotter than a CPU, but it can't possible run that hot without melting and destroying the rest of the computer. Two if the CPU got into the mid to high 70s then you would start to have problems like the computer shutting off or freezing but it couldn't possible get that high, again, without catching something on fire. So you won't find the CPU by itself running that hot. And by the way, I DO NOT recommend trying this out!!! End of disclaimer.

I have this same computer and noticed some of you responding to the GPU temps at that range would have caused it to burn itself up and destroy the rest of the computer... well, mine did just that. The GPU fried, burn the wireless, and other things, forgot what all HP said, but wouldn't come back on. I used it to play WoW as well. The computer sat on a hard surface and was used appropriately, but HP deemed the damage to be "user induced" and refuses to replace or repair the computer. I'm now having them send it back to let me have other professionals check it to determine if they believe it to be user induced or computer defect and if it is a defect (which I'm sure it is), I'll have to have make it a legal issue. So needless to say, I'm extremely dissatisfied, do not recommend buying this, if you have problems with heat, go ahead and send it in early to avoid the problem I've had.

That's unfortunate. Thanks for the info and the warning.
