Continuous activity on Hard Disk Drive

I am not sure if this is a HDD or Win XP thread, but I will post it here until I am told otherwise! My hard disk drive is showing continuous activity. There is constant clicking and the red LED at the front of the PC is on almost continually as well. In terms of performance all is well, given the PC is 6-7 years old. It runs on Windows XP. There is plenty of room on the hard drive.

Thus far I have defragmented the drive, run virus/spyware checks, disabled my antivrus (AVG Free), run registry checks, disabled my DVD drives, disabled a number of startup items via msconfig and deleted Windows Search. None of this has made any difference. I know there is a way of checking process activity, but this is a little outside my PC expertise. I would not know what I am looking at.

    Any advice?

    Thanks

    Gareth

1- Have you gone into Safe Mode and ran a virus check, or at least ran it during the boot up process? Mal ware can attach itself to 3rd party programs and be undetectable.

2- It could possibly be a rootkit, AVG does make an anti-rootkit tool but I am not very sure how well it works because it never caught the one I had (but Avast! anti rootkit found it). You will need to go into safe mode to run the anti-rootkit kits, since they run at ring 0 (where the kernal runs in silence).

    3. What processes are running in the background? Download and run HiJackThis! (Trend Micro HijackThis). This allows you to see hidden running processes and usually always spots a process that is ran only by a sneaky trojan or worm. You can post the results on here and someone might see a malware process

    4. Do you have a firewall? If not, I recommend COMODO firewall (unless you perfer ZoneAlarm, but it used to much resources for me).

Let me know how it all works out!

Many thanks for your very helpful reply - really appreciated. Apologies for the delay in replying, but I have been away. I carried out all your suggestions with the follwoing results:

I executed points 1 & 2 and Avast gave my PC a clean bill of health running from Safe Mode. In terms of the firewall I use Windows Firewall. AVG, which is my normal antivirus checker/spware, also gave me a clean bill of health. I have also run another couple of spyware checkers just to be sure - all ok

I also downloaded and ran HijackThis with the following result. I hope it make sense to someone on the forum!

I must admit the PC has calmed down a lot recently so maybe it was just a one off.

    Thanks again

To find out what processes are running all you need to do is right click on bottom taskbar and click on task manager. It will give a graph of cpu usage, what processes are running and what tasks are running at the moment. If you want you can copy and paste your readouts in next post.

OK, there are way to many repetitive programs running on your machine. I strongly suggest you look through all the programs listed and ask yourself if you ever use them. As far as my advice goes:

-Choose between these for an anti virus: Norton, Symantec, AVG, or Avast. For the ones you didn't pick, uninstall them.
-Update Advanced System Care to version 3.0, and only use the memory saver if you have LESS than 1 GB of memory
-If you use firefox, just download an ad blocker and get rid of that ad muncher and worm. If you are using Avast!, it will automatically block malware and HiJacking

I would also post this in the HiJAckThis! area on this forum, where the experts in process's dwell

    Many thanks hougstar and rokytnji

I will follow your advice over the next couple of days and reply back as well as posting on HijackThis forum as suggested.

I only downloaded Avast for the single purpose of running the additional virus check as I normally use AVG. Symntec should not be there other than for NortonSystem Tools and Norton GoBack. I do not use their antivirus program - I will double check. I must admit I do not use Firefox, being a long time IE user. Anyway the point is I must check the programs in use as you suggest.

Rokytnji - not sure how one can cut and past the TaskManager graph readout - no copy/paste function on the File drop down - suggestion?

Again my thanks to you both.

    hougstar/rokytnji

Given hougstar's advice to post this on the HijackThis part of the forum it seems more sensible to close this issue here. In case anyone with similar problems wishes to follow the progress of this issue please look under that part of the forum.

Many thanks to both of you for your help and advice - proves again what a great forum this is!
