    Problem with on-borad sound card

    Hi,

I used to have a Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS card but it stopped working so I went back to my motherboard sound card, keep in my mind that i never used it before.

My problem is the only sound that is working is the sound made when a user comes online in Windows Live Messenger, nothing else has sound (music, movies, mp3 file) non. Plus I have a 7.1 speaker system and when that sound (mentioned above) happens only the center speaker works!!!

    Very weird problem, plz help

    PC specs:
    MoBo: Asus P5ND2 SLI
    Speakers: Creative Inspire T7700
    OS: Windows XP Pro (SP3)

Attached is an image of the "Sound, video and game controllers" section in "Device Manager"

PS: In my MoBo's manual it is mentioned that it supports 7.1 speaker systems

Do you have the most recent drivers installed? Have you changed the default device to your on board audio controller (in "sounds and audio devices")? Do you have all of the wires connected correctly? Is the old card still in the system?

Click on run, type in dxdiag, find the sound tab (or sound 1) & click on that. Check to see that it is the default device, that no problems are found (in the box at the bottom), & that sound acceleration is turned on all the way. Click on the box that says "test direct sound". Do you hear anything?

Below I'm posting a screen shot of the dxdiag box from my computer. I have an asus MB with an nVidia audio controller onboard & I have selected that HOWEVER it isn't my only device & it isn't the default device so it should be different for you but I've circled what you need to check.

    I hope this helps.

Another thing you can check. Go into Bios and see if onboard sound is enabled.

I guess that tells you that the card is working and the socket is bad.

If you are not skilled enough to replace the jack on the card, then yeah, a new sound card is in order.
