Windows CD writing program can be weird like that sometimes. On my wifes XP on her laptop she encountered the same problem. We fixed it by bypassing Windows write to cd and used this MiniDVDSoft Free DVD Burner - Free software downloads and reviews - CNET Download.com instead. Its just a option Zero. you don't have to use it if somebody else chimes in with the fix.

First, is the device recognized during your POST (Power On Self Test)? (If it is this means the device is electronically functioning and "seen" by the bios.)

If it's "seen", open Device Manager and see if there are any errors etc reported for the device.

There could be a number of reasons for this problem. Dirty laser lens, the device (or part of it) has died, loose connections, motherboard controller problems, chipset drivers, etc etc.

Post back with your results and any further questions.

Go back to the device manager and right click on the drive.

Choose Uninstall and reboot the computer.

This will force a reinstall of both the drive and the drivers.

    Got any canned air?

If so shoot some inside the drive towards the top.
