    Smile CPU for idiots guide?

    Hi all,

My mobo died in my spare machine(2.7gb cpu) so i put another board in from a different, older pc.

That all fired up ok ! but is only a 900mhz cpu,so quite slow. I hoped i could swap the 2.7cpu to the old board but alas it's totally different.I trawled thru my spares but they're all old/small mhz,so looked on ebay for a bigger mhz, older cpu.

    Here's where i'm getting confused
    It's all Socket 478 (661)
    Socket AM2 (435)
    Slot 1 (341)
    Socket 370 (238)
    Socket LGA775 (211)
    Socket A (194)
Choose more... this that and the other, AMD cpu's don't accept intels (shame as i have a pentium 3 cpu,but it won't fit the replacement board..)

Anyone got a cpu for divys guide that would explain exactly how many types of cpu's are out there, etc? I don't even know which 'socket' or whatever,my cpu is located at,so how the heck am i gonna find a correct new one!
I may just get a newer board with a cpu included.

    Cheers, Dave.

You motherboard should have some identifying marks that should lead us to the chipset model number which should lead us to the CPUs that board supports.

    Hi Dijerati,
Where can i find these identifying marks? I've inserted (hopefully..) a pic,as it's quite large to post:
    mobo pic

On the board it does say MS-6378-VER:2
And i've just noticed when the cpu's out,on the cpu holder it says Socket 462

*edit* Cool,it's on the amd list, near the bottom - 'Socket A 462 pins' sdr.
so i have a choice from all those sempron, athlon and duron? Which models would best suit my board?Looks complicated ish!

    Cheers,Dave.

i thought that motherboard was a socket mPGA478 or 478-pin which would let you install Intel P4 or Celeron

if you are correct though it will take athlon (Thunderbird or Socket A) to 1.4GHz or Duron (Socket A) to 950MHz

I think that is twice you have done that. Don't do that again. And by "that" I mean apologize. Only the Malware Removal forum is (as it should be) closed, meaning all are welcome to contribute in these open forums. The only thing I ask is to remember it is the OP's thread for his problem, and if offering "countering" advice, provide links to supporting documents or reports (not to some poster in another forum) - I'm here to learn too.

Also, it common for someone to sneak in a response while typing your own - I try to hit preview to see if one came in, but some times I forget, and sometimes, when talking seconds apart, preview is of little help. So no worries.

it will take athlon (Thunderbird or Socket A) to 1.4GHz or Duron (Socket A) to 950MHz
According to MSI, it will take up to the Athlon XP2100+ Palomino (1.733MHz).

If you can find one, make sure you have a big enough power supply and enough case and CPU cooling too - it probably runs hotter and consumes more power than your current CPU.

Make sure your RAM will support 133MHz too - if not, your CPU will not run full speed.

I'm just going by the numbers given. There are probably 1000s of motherboards, I don't bother to keep track of any - I just look them up.
