black screen
hi it's me again. ok this is what i did: i remove the cpu and cpu heat sink fan to put heat resistant paste, i also bought extra ram which i install.
this is what happened: after i put everything back i went to restart the computer and the monitor gets a green light says no signal input and then i get a amber light and that is it.
i double check to see if the cpu and the heat sink is install properly i also remove the ram and put what i had to start with. double check all the connection, power connection i also remove the video card and put my old one which i know works.
i still get the black screen, i don't remember hearing any beeps afer i first put back the cpu and the new ram. and i don't hear any beeps now when i start the computer.
did i ****ed up my mobo or cpu. if i did ****ed up the mobo it is ok i was thinking of getting a new one with the pci-e video card and a new cpu. but i just would like to know what happened.
also if i get a new mobo can i just use the same hdd on the new mobo? do i have to do something for the mobo to recognise the hdd, i have windows xp install.

You don't even get a bios screen prompt? I would check bios first, vga plug and card second. I hope everything was unplugged and powered down for awhile before you made your changes, and that strict static discharge protocol was followed. Make sure no periphial hardware, via usb hookups etc, are plugged in. Start with only 1 ram stick at a time , and see if you get a bios post screen 1st, so you can see if hardrive, ram is recognised and check your boot order. Also resetting bios to system defaults, then make sure plug and play is enabled, and that hardrive is enabled in the boot order to boot 1st. Key thing here though is to get the bios post screen.
Another thing I thought of is my moniter, which is IBM, came with a software disk. Did yours come with one also?

you said chec bios first, how can i reset the bios? how can i reset bios to system default? i can't get any screen no bios screen or nothing so i can't set system to boot up from hdd. i did unplug everything before and i touch metal before i started taking things apart so static don't think is a problem so i hope.

Well that was what I was trying to establish, was if at least you got a bios screen. Are you plugging moniter into motherboard or PCI video card?
And what about my other questions?
Digerati nows more about this stuff than I do.

Try clean the RAM slots and reinstall the RAM again.
CPU should be OK, you can power on your PC but no POST screen.
Try use teh previous working RAM test.
Hope this helps!

i have try using the working ram i had, i had 2 sticks of 500 so i used 1 at the time different slot and still nothng could the ram be screw or the motherboard.
and what ohter question Rokytnji?

You answered it when you said you tried original ram. You might check on your power supply connections going to the motherboard next. Even if Pc is powering on, 1 connection snafu could be screwing with things.
Also with all ram pulled and PC powered up you should be getting some beep codes. If not you are probably right about the motherboard.
