Replacing power connector - what's needed?
Hi, our laptop will not power up.
we have tried another mains lead and another adaptor. The guy in the local repair shop says it will be the internal power connector.
He has quoted £150 to replace it.
What kind of tools are required to do this job? he mentioned a new connector would need soldering. also a special tool to seperate the two halves of the laptop.
it's a Compaq Presario.
i think it is a job i can have a go at.
i replced the cd drive a few weeks ago, it si more involved than that?
thanks for any help

how much is the laptop worth to you, as you've got to solder on to the motherboard 1 slip and it could be goodbye motherboard.
does it run on the battery ok?

I think £150 is way too high, but I also think for the reasons mentioned, the job should be left to a professional.
I suggest you try another shop and get a quote from them. I can not see the part being too expensive as they are pretty common. And labor by an experience laptop repair person should take no more than 1 hour - assuming nothing else is wrong. Even if 2 hours, it should cost less than that.

I'm willing to give it a go.
i just need to know what tools are needed and anything in particualr to look out for.
thanks

Hmmm, well good luck with that. I went to school to learn proper repair and soldering techniques for multi-layered printed circuit boards, noting most motherboards have 4 - 6 layers, with some having 8. Knowing how is only part of it. You need the tools and "practiced" skills to use them to ensure it is done right, without causing collateral damage.
Oh, and you need the correct replacement part too.
You should look around. It cost about $100 - $150 here in the states. There are sites dedicated to replacing broken power jacks too. I suspect there is one in the UK.

I was also taught to solder at school.
i now have the part out and am looking for a replacement. the power socket actually isn't soldered at all and looks like this

i could buy just the jack but it is easier to get with the two leads attached for not much more.
i used the Maintenance and Service guide for my laptop http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00753552.pdf
