Well beside ending up months, possibly years behind in critical updates after a format, formatting is always a last resort option as you also lose any drivers that are specific to that motherboard, such as on-board serial controllers. Did you go out to Dell and download the latest drivers for your motherboard after the format? Do other devices work in that USB port?

Didn't actually format hard drive. Had the NTLDR is missing so installed windows and have installed chipset driver but still doesn't recognize usb converter. Have got printer plugged into the next usb and that works. Will try swapping them over

Hmm, never did mention the word "format" - sorry about that. Nevertheless, having to reinstall Windows is almost as bad.

It is not just the chipset driver that matters as there are often other devices on the motherboard too - such as LAN, USB or sound drivers. They are not always rolled up in the chipset driver.

And did the SMC come with a driver disk?
