Keep on loosing external HD.
Hi all.
Before I went away, (holiday not chocky), I installed an external hard drive for my pics and videos. Everything was fine, bought up pics, edited them, all was great. I have just returned from hols, put pics on external HD, no problem.
This is where it gets weired. Whilst editing pics the external drive disappears. I looked in "COMPUTER" and only my C:\ drive was there. When I reboot the PC the D:\ drive is there. After a short period it disappears.
Any thoughts.

Possible problems:- bad/loose cable/connector
- bad/failing enclosure
- bad/failing/overheating hard drive
- bad USB port
- bad USB controller
- corrupt USB controller driver
(I am assuming this is enclosure is USB, but the same applies if Firewire or SATA)
Since at this point we have no clue where the problem might be, I would try the ext. drive on another computer and see if it behaves the same way there. If you have the same problem there, you have totally eliminated your computer from the equation.

Hi Digerati.
I have just tried rebooting my system, opened the external HD from the "COMPUTER" window and just sat there. Nine minits later it just disapeared.
Is this of any help?

Not really. It is probably not a loose connection, other than that, you still don't know if the problem is with the computer or the drive.

Thanks Digerati.
I'll see if it works on my Stepdaughters laptop.
Not sure when I'll be back. But I will let you know what hapens.

Digerati.
Thanks for your time.
I think I have found the problem. The external drive was conected via a USB2 multi point. Now it's plugged directly to the PC it seems to be working fine.
Again, thanks for your help.
