    CD-DVD Issues

    Dear All,

I would first like to say what a superb site this is; would have liked to have discovered it sooner, but better now than never!

I would be grateful if you could offer some advice on a current problem I'm having with my drives. I have spent a while checking previous threads, but have been unable to find one that exactly matches, although some good things have come out of the search.

I'm not too sure if you need the following information but this is my system:
    Windows XP Pro
    AMD Athlon XP 3000
    Maxtor 6Y120LO
    Sony DVD-ROM DDV1612
    Sony DVD-RW DW-U10A
VOBID InstantDrive CD SCSI Cd Rom

Okay, about six months ago, whilst writing a CD-R disk, the screen went blue and was filled with information, it then switched itself off and went into re-boot mode. Since then, I have not been able to insert a blank disc into the tray without this happening. Just occasionally it will accept a disc and start writing, but when it gets to the end of the writing sequence it goes into "blue screen mode", leaving me with an unfinalise, un-readable disc. Anyone need any coasters? I haven't been able to take down the screen info as it reboots too rapidly for me to get it down.

I've checked the properties boxes in all three "My Computer" icons and none of them have any reference to recording. As per previous threads I've altered the registry to 2 to reflect that the RW drive is meant to write, but to no avail. I've had the system since 2003 but the drives get very little use, normally for downloading programmes or storing music cd's, which they are still able to do.

    Any ideas?

    Regards, Ian

I would go out to sony and download the latest driver and install instructions for that drive.

    Just to verify:

The properties for all your DVD/CD drives have no Recording tab?

Do you have a burning program outside of XP?

The best way to reload drivers is simply to uninstall the drives via the Device Manager and reboot.

    Also:

    Auto Restart .................................................. .........

Also turn off the auto restart function:

How to turn off Auto Restart in XP

    Right click on My Computer

    Select Properties

Select the Advanced tab then the Startup & Recovery section

    Select the Settings button

Uncheck "Automatically restart" and then click Apply

This will give you a Blue Screen with the error message rather than restarting the computer.

Write down the error detail then use the reset button on the computer to restart.

Also if all the above gives no result try this:

    CD drive filters etc.
    --------------------------------------------------
If you feel comfortable editing the registry, here are some steps:

Click the Start button, click Run. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK.
Click the plus sign (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Click the plus sign (+) next to SYSTEM.
Click the plus sign (+) next to CurrentControlSet.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Control.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Class.
    Click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.

Once here click File in the upper left corner and choose: Export (this key)
Export to your Documents as a backup. If needed you can go back to this file and Import it back.

    Then:

On the right hand side of the window, click UpperFilters.
Click Edit on the menu bar.
Click Delete, and then click OK.
On the right-hand side of the window, click LowerFilters.
Click Edit on the menu bar.
Click Delete, and then click OK.
Click File, and then click Exit. Restart the computer normally

Also check UDMA/PIO settings under your IDE channel in the Device Manager.

If set to DMA try changing to PIO.

Digerati, many thanks for you suggestion. Prior to finding this site I had already attempted to contact Sony directly but was not able to locate a suitable website, I came across quite a few but nothing relevant to my needs. Whilst searching under the product title, I was continually directed to free download driver sites which then locked me into an endless loop unless I purchased one of their driver search programmes. I must admit a very frustrating experience, so I havn't tried it since. Is there a particular address which Sony have for downloading updates, etc. Regards. Ian

The drivers for disk drives are native in XP.

Installing the device installs the drivers.

If all the devices behave the same then one should suspect the IDE Channel.

Not to mention all the other points mentioned above.

BTW: Sony Support: Sony eSupport - Electronics - Select Your Model

    Jephree and Digerati,
    The story so far:
Well, that was a bit scary! I made the changes as suggested, one at a time, and in the order presented, rebooting in between each alteration. After the amendments to the drive filters, I was unable to reboot; the system kept crashing. I eventually got it back by going into "safe mode" and closing down from there. This happened on the other changes as well, but I was able to rescue the situation in the same way. The error messages were as follows:

    No more IRP stack locations - *** stop: 0x00000035 (0x825AFE70, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000); and
    Page fault in nonpaged area - *** stop: 0x00000050 (0xFD330000, 0x00000000, 0x804EEE1B, 0x00000000).

After all this high anxiety, unfortunately, the changes have not made any difference, other than the fact that I am unable to play a CD without running i-tunes to play it through. I have always used the inbuilt XP system for playing and recording, but now this doesn't work, it seemed a lot simpler than using the Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD 7.0.6 that came with the package when I bought it. I have run the available updates from Pinnacle for my version and will now try recording data with it. I will let you know how it goes. Fingers crossed!

The Sony website given is for America and its environs, and didn't contain any reference to my drives, so I altered it for UK but still unable to find any sotware to download. Would unplugging the drives, and then reconnecting them, force the system to reboot, taking them back to their original state, or would this drop me further into the mire, or should I just ditch them and buy replacement drives?

Once again, thanks for your assistance, and I'll speak to you later, if the system doesn't disappear into the ether!! Regards, Ian

There seems to be a fix for your Stop 35 problem but the Stop 50 is not as easy - you need to narrow the problem down a bit.

jephree mentioned IDE channel - how are those two opticals physically connected? Are they both on the same cable?

If me, I would uninstall the drivers for the opticals, power down and unplug the computer, touch bare case metal to discharge static. Then disconnect the cables to the opticals and unplug all extra devices such as external drives and USB devices, memory sticks and reboot and make sure the computer is working fine. If fine, then re-add each device, one at a time.

Just to clarify what my suggestions implied:

The drive filters mentioned are added by third parties. Removing them returns the registry to XP default.

XP default uses an inbuilt version of Roxio for CD's.

Again there is no software that Sony would supply outside of the outside chance of firmware.

Drivers are installed by XP and are installed upon the device install. Hence uninstalling and reinstalling the device reinstalls the drivers.

If both drives are on the same IDE Channel then again uninstalling this channel and rebooting should reset that channel.

I agree with Digerati to basically remove these drives and start from scratch.

You posted in the beginning that you were getting blue screens and I posted some methods of getting details beyond the Stop error itself. If the blue screens continue I'd suggest posting some dump logs.

I am unsure what you mean by ". I have always used the inbuilt XP system for playing and recording" ... Again the XP burner is an inbuilt version of Roxio but the playback is Windows Media Player. Is this what you refer to?

I am getting the impression of many conflicting software/media programs here.

I would remove (disconnect) the drives and all media software and then try to reinstall the drives (one at a time) and one and one only media software program.

You also originally mentioned three drives:

    Sony DVD-ROM DDV1612
    Sony DVD-RW DW-U10A
VOBID InstantDrive CD SCSI Cd Rom
