    Ram Problem

Hi Guys I have a little Problem with my Ram I installed it for a total of 4GB but it's only showing 2.81GB, now I understand with 32bit OS i can only see 3.5GB but I'm not even seeing that. So I checked to see what is going on with CPUZ and this is what I cam up with...

I noticed that slot 2 is 6400 all the rest are 5400 So I called NCIX where I got it from and the 2 ram sticks came as a twin pack and the guys told me that my timing might be off on that one slot. I don't know if he's right but if he is how can I adjust the timing so they all read the same.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Try moving the RAM around the slots and see if you have an "off slot" or an "off stick".

Do you have shared Graphics RAM?

Also the 32 bit "limit" is variable depending on the computer hardware. It could be anywhere from 3GB to 3.5GB.

If you find you have an "off slot" or more likely an "off stick" try using only the other 3 and see what happens.

I would guess you got a mixed up package.

Thanks what I was kinda thinking too, but I will try to move them around to see what happens.

Ok I swaped the 2 and 4 now 4 is saying 6400 but on the heat sheild of the RAM they both say 5400 all the exact numbers on both. Do anyone think that when they assembled them they grabbed a 6400 by mistake and stuck a 5400 heat shild on it?

Your theory sounds valid. It is certainly not the motherboard (slot).

That one stick is not lying to CPU_Z.

What happens when you leave it out?

If you mix speeds the lowest speed will rule. Meaning that 6400 will be reduced to 5400.

Within this process there might be the functional lapse you see.

You can also run MemTest on it as it might be simply bad RAM.

    MemTest
    --------------------------------------------------
    Try running MemTest.

Also after all is said and done: if your motherboard does support DDR2 800 (6400) you would be best off upgrading all your RAM to DDR2 800 (6400).

Faster if you can afford it.

I'll try to take that one out see what happens but I will be giving them a call in the morning. I would upgrade to 800 but now that I have all the same I will be stuck with 4 sticks of memory that I might not be able to sell.
