could i, should i - replace the motherboard myself?

    hi,

a couple of days ago i turned the PC on with no power light, only the fan turning. there was no picture or sound at all.

i had two local repair men look at it and one said the motherboard needs replacing and that would be £135, and the other suspected the motherboard and said the motherboad he would put in would include a new power pack and a couple of other items (i can't remember what but they were necessary because the motherboard i have is an old one so new items are needed with the new motherboard)

i think i can still get the same kind of motherboard for about £60. i am wondering if i should have a go at fitting it myself

    the motherboard i have i an MS-6533EG

Obviously i don't want to break anything else by fitting it incorrectly, but if it can save me £75 it is well worth it

    thanks for any help

    James

Sure you can do it yourself.

Computer building is a few screws and plugs.

Most "local repair men" have no other skills.

That being said I would troubleshoot the current situation first.

Remove the RAM and then start the computer. Does it BEEP at you?

i approached the owner with this (my Dad) and it turns out he has placed an order for a laptop

seeing how things go he will decide whether he wants me to have a go at fixing this, or not.

    thanks
