    i resolved the problem. lol. i just moved my laptop to a new desk and i guess the material on the other desk conducted pretty well. thanks for everyones help!

    is it a smooth surface? like i said in a previous post, moving to a smooth surface like granite or glass will usually make it run cooler. Glad to hear you resolved it.

    Thanks for the followup - but just for the record, when trying to get rid of heat, conduction is good, insulation is bad. So it would seem the old desk was "insulating" (like wrapped in a blanket) your laptop, and now, with the new desk, heat is being "conducted" away!

    BTW - I think there's a reason you don't hear makers call them laptops anymore - and desktops was already taken, traytops does not sound good - so notebooks it is.

    ok this problem has just recently resurfaced. im trying to re install windows xp onto the laptop with the same configuration. during the isntallation the laptop just shutsdown.

    Andrew,
    I have the same notebook with the same problem. It was running xp media center edition fairly choppy (should be running perfect) with random glitches and lag for a couple seconds every 5 minutes or so and windows login and logoff sounds skip and are choppy. Now, while trying to reformat, the computer shut down before the setup even finishes loading drivers. If you've found a/the solution please let me know and thank you to all the members who respond.
