second DVD drive not working after i put it in
Hi,
I have a problem with my DVD drive. I have just installed a second DVD drive and it is recognizing that it is there but when i put a disc in, its saying please insert disc?..
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

If it is an IDE drive are the jumpers set correctly?
Is it detected correctly in the Device Manager?
-
Hi and thanks for your speedy reply!..yes i have set one jumper to master and the other to slave and in device manager it has- DVD/CD ROM DRIVES-
HL-DT-ST DVD RAM GSA-H10N ATA DEVICE,
HL-DT-ST DVD RAM GSA-H44N ATA DEVICE.
THE DVD drive i put in was an external one that is the same model (LG) as the one already in the pc and it was working fine before i put it in the pc. The lights are working on it and its in my computer as DVD RW drive (I) and the first dvd drive is DVD RW drive(D).
This is the frist time i have installed a DVD drive to a pc, i had the instruction sheet that came with it and followed them but it doesnt work : ( the first drive (D) is working all fine ???

I would set the new drive to Master (or set both to Cable Select) then plug the black end of the ribbon (Master) into the new drive leaving the old working drive disconnected.
See if the new drive works then.
Also just to verify this new drive was external and you removed it from the external enclosure?

sounds to me like it may be a bad DVD drive. but try Jephrees suggestion b4 u write it off, hes pretty smart.
-
Hi again, i did as you said Jephree and put the black cable in set it to master and left the working dvd drive unplugged.. same thing is happening, its showing in my computer and not recognizing the disc in it?..
and yes it was removed from a external enclosure..
Is there any settings somewhere i might not have changed somewhere?.. the light is still working on it when i put a disc in but thats all?.. Thanks heaps for your communication i really appreciate it

Also check UDMA/PIO settings under your IDE channel in the Device Manager.
If set to DMA try changing to PIO.

Thanks for that.. I am printing it out and will give it a go.. Should i first plug back in the other drive and put the other back to master?..
-
I would leave it as is as long as you are troubleshooting this drive.
If you need the DVD/CD then go ahead and change it back.
For both troubleshooting and usage in general the "Cable Select" option might be best.
This needs to be set on both drives then as it is named the cable selects the drive i.e. grey / slave > black / master.

ok, thanks you...i will change it to the cable select and see how i go .be back soon to let you know how i get on..thanks again : )
