Re: second DVD drive not working after i put it in
Hi again, just to let you know, i changed them both to cable and deleted to "upperfilters and Lowerfilters" and still not work,
so i then thought i would take it out and try it again in the external enclosure and it didnt work : ( so im guessing its knackered and will just have to buy another.
I'm hoping its pretty straight forward to putting in the new one.
Thanks again for all your help anyways..
This forum is the best!!!! : )

You have already been through the install and uninstall process.
There is nothing more to it.
You said this external drive worked before you removed it from the external enclosure?
Just curious. These drives are not meant to be removed but all the same they are just the same as internal drives with the exception of the enclosure adapts the IDE/ATA to USB.
I just wonder if the adapter has something to do with it or perhaps just by removing it from the external enclosure it has some type of self destruct mechanism in place.

Anyway let us know if we can help further. Fortunately these drives are fairly inexpensive.

I didnt know that.. I dont know a lot about pc's but the external enclosure that the dvd drive was in was identical to the the one in my new pc and the plugs all looked the same too??..I have also used this same enclosure for an old hard drive that i took out of my old pc and that worked fine till it died the other day but it was old and only a 40gb so not to worry. Thats when i remembered that i had the dvd drive that used to be in it and then when i seen it was the same as the pc's i thought seen as there is a space on the pc for it i would have a crack at putting it in..maybe it does have some destructive mec in there that killed my old hard drive as well??.. i truly don't know

Is this external enclosure connected to the computer with a USB connection?
Also if you're re-trying the DVD drive in the external did you set it back to Master?
-
sorry ..yes the enclosure is connected with USB and power cord.
and i set the drives both back to master,
thats the way it was before.

Do you get the same errors when you try the drive in the enclosure?
How did the hard drive die? Did you try the hard drive internally?
Perhaps the enclosure is the issue. Anyway just speculating. Curious.

No errors as such come up, the hard drive just stopped working...You could be right about the enclosure being the problem. I havent yet tried it in the pc so i might give it a shot and just see if it works there. Do i just plug it into the same plugs that i used for the second dvd drive?.. im sure they are the same plugs.. sorry if thats a silly question, never put another hard drive in pc b4

Yes it is the same. They are both IDE/ATA devices.
Newer drives use SATA but that is a different beast.
Again with IDE/ATA drives you need to set Master/slave or Cable Select jumpers.
This is because IDE/ATA put two drives on a channel.
The newer SATA configuration only puts one drive to a channel so the Master/slave thing is becoming somewhat obsolete.

also i just noticed the pins on the back of the dvd drive where the IDE plug goes in have been bent a little and one is pushed in a bit...maybe thats the cause for the dvd drive not working in either the enclosure or the pc?.. will def try the hard drive in pc just to see now.. i hope it works i have heaps of movies on it that i cant get...
Just curious, can you overload a hard drive???... i had it pretty full and the last time i used it when i went my computer the bar under it was full and red... i was taking some files off it and half way through the process it just all closed on me and then i couldn't find the hard drive at all on the pc ..It was really old and only 40 gb so im not really bothered but i was just curious as i have never seen the bar red under it in my computer before and wondered if i overloaded it...

mmm...ok this is probably a real silly question but i dont have a clue...
my new pc has a sata hard drive in it already, would this be why i cant get it to work or that wouldnt matter?
