Laptop Touchpad not being seen, even replacement
Hi, I'm new here =]
I have a Dell Cpx laptop which had a touchpad which was not working, (track stick was not working either). I opened her up, and found that the little ribbon cable for the touchpad was ripped. So the obvious thing to do was order another one. I did, and have received it today.
I installed it (this one does not have a thing on top of the ribbon cable for the track stick) and when I booted into windows xp, it did not work. Checked device manager, scanned for new hardware, and have not found anything. It's not seeing it. I don't see why it wouldn't see it, since it is a new and the cable isn't ripped. Any advice would be great!!
Thanks,
Bob

My experiance with Device manager not recognizing hardware is its either non compatible or too old or too new a device for motherboard. If you ordered it from Dell it should be the right device if you gave them all pertinant system info on your Lappy. You can also go to Dells website, locate the drivers for your new touchpad and burn them to cd . Go to add hardware wizard and click install new device since its not on the list. Pick manufacturer and device from columns supplied and insert cd and install driver. Your gonna have to do all this in the ADVANCED procedure mode. I am telling you this even though I don't know what operating system you are running and maybe "seywar" will read your post and reply. He seems to know his way around operating systems . Good luck with fixing this as I know what you are going through.

Thanks for your reply,
The driver's on the Dell website are only for up to W2K, and this laptop is running XP. I searched google and downloaded one from here:
http://members.driverguide.com/drive...driverid=62752
I installed it, but it just used the ps/2 mouse which I installed the driver with. For example, when looking at the driver properties, it says "location: plugged in at ps/2 mouse". I guess it sees that mouse first and uses it? Not sure. Any other ideas?

Who did you purchase mouse from? Ebay,Dell Etc............?

From ebay. The seller had lots of good feedback, so I doubt it is a bad board, if that's what you were thinking?

Naw, I was just hoping they could refer you to the driver. Guess not. Is there a part # on the pad and if so did you write it down and google it to find the driver. You probably did but I gotta ask anyway. I aint no computer whiz or geek, just a hardnose biker who plays with computers like I do with my bikes.

It is the Latitude CPx H.
Yep, searched for p/n: 8672R, but found nothing. Thanks for the crazy fast replies!
I tried installing the driver mentioned before without the ps/2 mouse connected, but it still says the same thing, and doesnt recognize the touchpad.

Just to verify you tried this driver (albeit @ 2000):
Alps - Driver
Applies to:
Dual Pointing Device

Also just to verify you installed a retail version of XP on top of the original 2000?
Here is the Service Manual for your computer:

Was your replacement a Dell part?
Dell is very proprietary.
