No Power up.

No Power up.
Hi Folks - thought i'd post with a small dilemma. I got a new Power supply as the last one was too small. A few months back i built a pc and it wouldn't power up - I had a green light on MB but nothing else. I found some website and it showed me pwr lead settings etc and after lots of guesswork ( Moving the power lead from 2 pins to pins ) the pc powered up and all was fine.
Anyway i put the new PS in the other day as i needed a bigger boost - this one is 450w which should fulfill my needs. As before i had no power but green light was on the MB. Stupidly i removed the ORANGE/WHITE lead and tried it in all sorts of positions, all ways round, back to front and upside down. All to no avail! Thinking i had bought a duff PS i put the old one back in and that didn't work either. Tried a 3rd one and still no luck.
I now have no idea where the little orange and white lead goes. or which way round. I have lots of pins on the bottom right of my ASUS A8V MB such as LED etc but the power seemed to work on a bunch of other pins slightly to the left of the others?
I found various asus websites but none with colour pictures or with pics that remotely resemble the leads inside the case i am using. most say yellow/yellow pwr leads but mine are orange/white etc
One other thing i noticed which seems disturbing is that when i take out the 20 Pin plug from the MB to give it a quick check i insert it back in and as its about 1/8 in the power supply seems to start to power up. Sometimes heatsink fan spins too. As this happens the green LED on MB flickers on and off rappidly. Then it all stops as 20 pin plug is pushed all the way in?? Most odd
Well thats about it - if anyone has seen this sort of problem please help. If more information is required please ask and i'll update when i get back from a course tomorrow night.
OS = Win Xp
I've seen sooooo many incidents of exact same problemn but no-one seemed to have an answer so thought i'd give this a go
Thanks in advance
Grant.
EDIT - Managed to get hold of another power pack today and tried all 3 packs in another pc - they all work! Also took MB out of case and checked all over for any bits touching etc but it all seems fine Praying i haven't blown anything up - but will take parts out one by and continue to play with the wires.

You cannot go by color - there is no standard. However, typically the cables from the case are labeled. Sadly there is no standard there either, so the names may not match what your motherboard says.
Did you check your manual for your motherboard? I note there are several A8V versions. Looking in the AV8-E SE manual, that board requires you connect 2 power leads to the motherboard, the main 20 pin, and the 4-pin ATX12V connector - they are not together as they often are on new boards. Did you connect both?
In this manual on page 1-30, it clearly shows the case PWR leads should be connected to pins 11 and 13.

if its the power buttons, just find the ones that go to the power button and start switching them between the pins. also make sure the positive and negative are correctly positioned. sometimes it matters sometimes it dont. like with my gigabyte board, i can have the positive and negative switched on my reset button and HD light and they still work, but if i get the positive and negative on the power button and LED they wont work. (funny i know, you can blame gigabyte) also, could be the connectors are warn, try swapping out the power switch in the case with another one.

Page 2-28 illustrates the front panel connector positions. (I chose the basic A8V for this.)

Is this "orange and white lead" (you're referring to) a two, three, or four pin connector?
