    Angry Issues with PC - possible video card problem?

    OK, here's my problem; any help would be gratefully received. A couple of weeks ago my PC died. I'd had it only about 4 months - it was a replacement for an earlier machine which developed a motherboard fault. The friendly computer guy at the repair shop told me that this one had the same problem; no, he couldn't fix it, and more fool me for buying a secondhand Time computer because *everyone* knows they're junk - well, I guess I do now!

    I have been given a machine by a friend of a friend but although this was completely gratis it seems to have issues of its own. It's basically a Packard-Bell motherboard with a P4 processor, 512MB of RAM and an 80GB HD which had been formatted and onto which I did a fresh install of XP. So far, so good, but when I came to go online with IE8 I found that there were numerous problems with scrolling - namely, that it's very slow and jerky with a slow 'refresh' rate. This only happens on certain web pages, others run perfectly - and doesn't seem to be a problem when scrolling on Windows boxes etc. The graphics side of things doesn't seem 'quite right' generally; some banner ads in particular seem to take a very long time to load, and the screen is apt to 'flicker' or jolt occasionally. I don't think it's just slow running as the machine is a similar spec to my previous one which was very smooth and quick, and as I said, when it does scroll properly it seems perfectly happy doing so.

    The graphics card in the machine is an aftermarket one; an Nvidia GeForce 6600GT which from what I can tell is quite a high-end gaming card. I did wonder whether the drivers on the machine were the latest set, so I downloaded them from the Nvidia website. This only caused more problems; namely, the machine freezing and hanging partway through the boot process or getting to the desktop only to shut itself down and reboot. Guessing that the new drivers were conflicting with something, I quickly uninstalled them which seems to have solved those issues but has again left me with great difficulty scrolling on Web pages.

    I'm something of a novice and am wondering where to go next. Am I barking up entirely the wrong tree by assuming that it's a video issue? Should I write off this machine as a bad idea and try to source another? Is there anything I can run which would give you a better idea of the potential problems with this PC? Any advice would be fantastic...

    This is the latest Nvidia driver for your card:

    Did you try this? Did you uninstall the previous driver first?


    Also:

    A dxdiag log provides us with your system information.

    From what part you have in your system to the system manufacturer, it contains the information needed to help you fix your problem.


    Click Start -> Run... and type dxdiag then hit OK

    The DirectX Diagnostic Tool will launch.

    In the lower right hand corner, push the button that says "Save All Information"

    Wait while it gathers your system information and exports it to a text file.

    Save the output file as DxDiag.txt to your desktop.

    Hi Jephree, thanks for coming back to me!

    I didn't want to uninstall the existing drivers - as you might imagine I'm a bit nervous about messing around too much with the graphics side of things for fear of being left with no display whatsoever and being thus unable to revert to the previous configuration. I was going to try disconnecting the Nvidia and using the on-board output, but my monitor won't connect to the motherboard's male socket due to the plug being a completely different shape(whilst i didn't set the machine up, I'm guessing this may have been disabled in BIOS anyway?)

    I know it says I'm using the generic video driver and doesn't seem to have any info about the Nvidia card; as I said I did try a driver download previously but when I installed it it seemed to destabliise the machine to the point of making it completely unusable. I also forgot to mention that I just noticed how slow the 'redraw' (if that's the right term) is when dragging windows around the screen. And yet I'm scrolling on this page now without problems - it all seems very weird

    Removing drivers never leaves you without a display. VGA drivers will always load and according to Dxdiag that is all you have right now.

    You must always remove old graphics drivers prior to installing new ones.

    Go to the Control Panel and Add/Remove programs. If you have a listing for Nvidia choose Remove then specify Display only.

    After the computer reboots load the latest driver from Nvidia.

    If that does not work then remove it and start trying older (Legacy) drivers from Nvidia.

    As of now you are not utilizing that Nvidia card.

    Well I have re-installed the Nvidia drivers and (touch wood) it's solved the scrolling problem - in fact the display looks fantastic now I've set up the colours etc.

    I can now surf and use message boards etc again, so thank you very much for the help - it's been invaluable.

    There is still one small niggle - as I mentioned before the machine has failed to complete the boot sequence a couple of times since I carried out the update resulting in me having to reset - any thoughts on what might be causing this? It runs through the Windows XP logo screen with the scrolling bar but then when the cursor appears the drive light goes out and the whole thing freezes - it never gets as far as the welcome / user select screen. It's annoying more than anything but I can't imagine it's doing the components much good when it happens.

    As I said, your advice has already helped me greatly; any further suggestions would be similarly appreciated.

    Do you know if all your motherboard drivers were loaded?

    Do you know if you have the latest BIOS?

    Do you know the exact ID of the motherboard?

    If not run CPU_Z.

    Also I'd certainly advise having at least 1GB RAM although I am not necessarily attributing that to this issue.

    hmmm sounds like driver issues like the vid card, but if the the rest of the comp is stock ud think ud have all the drivers. . .

    I don't know about the motherboard drivers / BIOS, as I didn't set up the board and to be honest don't know enough about doing this to want to start messing unless I have clear instructions.

    The machine seemed OK yesterday; it booted and ran fine all evening without problems. However tonight it got as far as the desktop, I opened up Internet Explorer to check my email and all of a sudden the screen went blank and the monitor clunked into standby. About 10 seconds later it came back up and went straight to a blue screen with a load of text on it, but this didn't stay up long enough for me to catch anything more than the first couple of lines: something about windows shutting down the computer to prevent damage, and there being a problem with the following file: NV4_disp - which I am guessing is some kind of video driver for the Nvidia card.

    Once the BSoD disappeared it ran through the bootup sequence, stayed up and has been fine ever since - I'm using it now to post this!

    Could it possibly be an issue with the video card or motherboard that only manifests itself when the machine is booting from cold?

    Yes that is your Nvidia drivers. You might want to shut off auto restart and read the rest of this post:

    Again running CPU_Z in order to ID the motherboard would let us check the BIOS level. It may need an update.

    Your Nvidia also has a BIOS of its own and it could be tripping on the motherboard BIOS especially if it is not a Nvidia chipset.
