    Sound Problems

I don't think what I have done could have caused my sound problem, but I am at a loss, so thought I would ask here.

Today I installed a new power supply on my computer (pretty good for a grandma!). Everything so far is working great .... except my sound. My sound worked fine before, so it has me baffled as to what the problem could be. The reason I installed the new power supply was because the fan quit working in the old one and my computer kept shutting down, and it was replaced with the same model number as the one I took out so there was no upgrading involved there. The only other thing I did inside the case was blow out the cobwebs.

I have checked and made sure the speakers are firmly plugged into the correct hole, there are actually 2 speaker holes, one on the motherboard (I assume) the other on the actual sound card, I am pretty sure the speakers were plugged into the sound card one, in either case I did try both holes. I checked to make sure they had power and were turned on and the sound was not muted. I did notice when I move the slider on the speaker icon system sound it does beep at me, can not recall if it did that before. I can also hear scratchy, buzzy helicopter sounds when I turn my speakers up, but no other sound from any other source (utube for example). I have ran the sound troubleshooter but it was no help. I am a loss as to what to check next.

Can a sound card go out just like that, maybe by getting cobwebs on it? Is there some way to test the sound card before I invest in a new one?

    Thanks for any help!

    Try re-seating the sound card.

If that doesn't work then re-load the drivers.

If that doesn't work try going back to the motherboard audio.

Most likely you have a BIOS setting that switches between on-board or PCI card.

Most likely the on-board audio is currently disabled in the BIOS.

You would need to enable it in order to use the motherboard audio.

This is so frustrating, I am to the part about re-loading the drivers but when doing a net search for the driver file I just end up on advertising pages with no driver to download. When doing a driver install from the control panel in sounds do I need to uninstall first? I really need to find a driver file to download first though I think.

Thinking back, I seem to recall this happening one time before, I can't recall the reason why it stopped, but do recall it just all of a sudden starting to work again (after I had given up!)

    You need the drivers for:

    crystal sound fusion cs4281

Do you not have the driver CD that came with the card?

    If not we can search:

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&s...cs4281&spell=1

The best location if you do not have the CD would be the manufacturers web site but I cannot locate one at the moment.

Again another option is to enable your on-board audio via the BIOS Setup and use the motherboard port.

Is the sound card listed in the Device Manager?

Right click My Computer then click Manage then Device Manager

I don't think there was a cd for the sound, the only cd's I have are the mfg. recovery discs for this computer.

If I should find the drivers needed, do I need to uninstall the current drivers or just install the updated ones over the current ones?

Yes the sound card is listed in the Device Manager.

As to the Bios, I have no idea what that is.

Let me ask this, do I need to buy a specific sound card for this computer, or will any sound card work? I am thinking it may be easier than trying to figure this out. The one that is in there now has a game controller connection and then 4 plug holes, pink, blue, lt. green, and purple (i think it is purple). It looks like it would be fairly simple to replace (I hope). The only question I have is if I replace the sound card, will the problem be solved, or could it be something else that caused this.
