Computer Wont Load, Black Screen Y∞Y AGAIN

    Hello
I have already posted on this forum, back on 3/10/07 with this problem but i cannot now post a reply to that thread, for some reason (i am not that good with these things).
Right, to make sure we're on the same page this was the previous conversation:

Hello. Like many people i should make it clear that i know very little about computers and how they work, so i'm probably going to make a fool of myself but here goes...!
We recently got a PC and had the graphics card, RAM and i think hard drive (?) replaced because it wasnt working before - wouldnt do anything. It has been fine for some time but i have just turned it on and it goes through the screens that says press Del to enter setup (or something similar) and then comes up with a black screen, that eventually has Y∞Y (Y infinity sign Y) in the top left. Anyone know what is going on and what this means? Something to do with the drives or Windows XP since it doesnt get as far as loading that?
    Thanks

Enter Setup and see if any hard drives are detected.

When you say you recently got this ... and all this rebuilding ...

Did you recently get this rebuilt computer or did you rebuild a computer that was recently new?

Who built it? Do they not guarantee their work?

Anyway the BIOS is not finding a boot drive or else the boot drive is damaged.

You could try the manufacturers diagnostic on the hard drive if the BIOS detects it.

My boyfriend put these new components in to the reasonably new computer (his parents had it and gave it to us). It has worked fine for months.
The computer detects the hard drive in the set up but i dont know how to run the diagnostic on the hard drive - can you explain how i do that?

The manufacturer will have a diagnostic program on their web site to download and then create a boot floppy or CD if you do not have a floppy drive.

You need to know the manufacturer of the hard drive.

Anyway that brings us up to now:
i have been away for some time. I am now back on track to try and sort out my computer. my hard drive is a samsung sp2514n so i have looked on samsungs web page. it refers to a download Hutil_creator.exe but i cannot find that program on there. The file it has on the top of the page is called Hutil 210. However i have found the creator file elsewhere on the internet if it is that one i need to use. Getting past that problem theres another, i dont have a floppy disk drive, only CD-ROM, how would i put this info on to a cd? Just copy, paste and write or do i have to do something else? Then how do i get the broken computer to run the cd? I have read elsewhere it says to run it in DOS mode, i get into that by getting the computer into safe mode, but it wont let me get into that either...

    http://www.samsung.com/global/busine...ort_HUTIL.html

Hutil 210 ISO (For CD ROM Drive).zip (Size : 1.5MB)

After extracting you will see an ISO file.

You need to create a disk image of it. Do not copy it. If you have Nero there is an option to "Create Disk Image".

If you do not have Nero here is a free ISO burning program:

    http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm

An ISO on a CD becomes a boot disk so just boot the CD and follow the prompts.

thanks for posting back.Did i do this right because it wasnt as straightforward.
i downloaded the HUTIL file for CD-Rom from Samsung. I put that on my working computer. Then downloaded the ISO program. The HUTIL thing is a Zip file and it wont let me do anything but unzip it. So i did and then it comes up with the option of create iso image file, of the new folder, which i do, and then once that is created it looks like a cd with ISO on it and i choose copy image to cd. Once on the cd i then put that cd into my broken computer and start it up. It waits for a while on the press del to enter set up but then goes through to the blank page, with this time Boo from ATAPI CD-ROM

Is this message something to do with the fact i went into BIOS when it still wasnt working and changed the first boot drive to CD above hard drive and floppy or is it something else? It wont run no matter what order i boot the boot drive in BIOS
Have i done this right? Its all very confusing.

    You did it right.

Unfortunately it is indicating a problem deeper than your drives.

I would suggest testing the RAM but apparently nothing will boot.

Try unplugging and replugging all your drive cables.

Thanks for all your help but we have fixed it. It finally managed to read the Windows XP cd (which it never would before). Once that was read we reinstalled xp, did some partition thingie and now it works. So have no idea what went on but at least its working again

    No idea?

    What did you do?

Anyway other people have this problem and I've never seen a solution.

    Hmm...

Anyway glad you got it going.

That "infinity" sign is so mysterious.
