blank screen on boot, no beeps, blinking cursor

I have an old Compaq Evo N160 and one day I was watching videos on YouTube and my computer shut off. I tried to turn it back on and it showed the Compaq screen, then just went to a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left.

I removed the hard drive and tried to start it, and it did the same thing, except it said Operating system not found, and then had the blinking cursor under it.

Is my hard drive fried? Is it worth fixing? My DVD-Rom drive is non-working also...so I cant reload an operating system even if I wanted to.

The blinking cursor indicates the computer can find nothing to boot.

Hard drives are not worth "fixing" if there is a mechanical failure.

You can "slave" the drive on another computer to see if it does work and if it does you can at least extract any data.

If you have a floppy drive you can run the manufacturers diagnostic tool on it.

    So new hard drive time?

And I guess since my cd-rom doesnt work, I will need a new one of those too, so that I can install an operating system on it.

Most likely yes but there are other reasons the drive might have disappeared.

If you have a floppy drive I would run the diagnostic on it.

Also check if it is detected at all in the BIOS Setup.

As to a CD drive fortunately they have become very inexpensive. You can get DVD/CD ROMs for less than $20. DVD/CD +RW for less than $30.
