Hello,

My nephew called me asking if I had any idea what could make his card reader not work, they are taking pics of a new baby and want to send them out asap but are stuck.

Apparently when they stick the sd card right into the sd card slot on their hp 9000 series laptop and it "recognizes" the card and they drag their pics off there to the desktop in a folder, (not using any sorta of camera software) and have been doing this without problems till now (laptop maybe 5-6 months old and hundreds of pics were moved this way they said) but they said it isn't even "seeing" the card now.

I wasnt sure what to advise (they run xp home on that machine) but I gave them a few things to try (none of which worked)

Hopefully my advise didnt mess anything up MORE than it already is hehe

I told them to...

1. Stick it back in the camera take a few more shots make sure the card isn't on LOCK mode and try again, also said reboot and try but neither helped.

2. Told them to try the card in a different computer slot, so they confirmed the card was fine, works in other pc slot, and they tried a different card in theirs and it too wont read.

So we have narrowed it down to something within their card reader not a bad card or anything, but as to what else deeper they can do I am looking to you guys for help on what to check or try.

With them being 2 states away its a bit hard via email but figured with the basic info given here maybe I can give him some more in depth things to try.

I doubt the actual hardware of the card reader within the unit died, probably moreso an issue related to softwware or drivers maybe?

What suggestions do you guys have?

Was thinking maybe something within the system device manager but not sure with the machine not being in front of me what to tell them to look for or try to un-install and re-install etc.

Thanks for any help on this,

Bill
