I looked in the manual for an MSI K7T266 Pro2 about hooking up USB. I think the case (purchased separately) has the newer type of connector for USB, where it's all one thing and there's a blank area where no pin can go to prevent improper installation. I don't see a way to hook up the case's USB ports. Anyway, I looked up J12 and JKBV1 in the manual and mine are set to default, so I'm not sure why the on-board USB port in the back aren't working. The manual does mention something about having to turn these features on in the bios, but I'm afraid to touch my bios before asking for help.

What bios have you got?

It's an AMI Bios.

EDIT: All the motherboard drivers are up to date. I don't know how to flash the bios, but is that something I should do. Isn't it a bit strange that my on-board USB ports don't work ??

EDIT: Update---> I tried to plug one of my old game controllers (you know the ones with the pins before USB became the standard) into the on-board input, and that wouldn't work either. If I recall, this was a plug & play type of controller, so I don't think it needs drivers.

Are you putting this old board into a new case? Is that all?

Did this board work previously?

Even if the case leads are USB 2.0 they still fit the same internal ports as USB 1.1. The plugs and ports should be the same 10 pin with one blank.

The motherboard USB ports (rear of case) have no bearing on the internal ports.

Did the rear ports ever work?

If you need to make changes in the BIOS Setup this is not Flashing the BIOS.

Just enter BIOS Setup and check out the options. There is not much damage you can do here. You can always reset the Defaults.

I am not sure what flashing the BIOS would get you. Depends on what you are trying to do here and what all you are upgrading.

This is a fairly old board and probably has not had a BIOS upgrade in quite a while.

Version 3.7 Update Date 2002-10-22 to be exact.

My sister's boyfriend is trying to be the "computer repair man" around town and he put this board into a computer of mine because it wasn't working and I asked him to look at it. He lost interest in it and by the time I got it back, everything was loose inside, and it still had the nice graphics card I'd put into it, but he'd replaced the existing motherboard with this one (the existing one was loose inside of there as well. I've been learning more about taking computers apart since then and I'm taking it upon myself to reassemble it and get it working. It boots up into windows xp just fine, except I get a "new hardware found" message every time that I don't know what is for. I just cancel it every time. I installed Warcraft 3 onto and set the graphics to max settings and it ran without a hitch, except the sound wouldn't initialize (I recently installed the latest drivers). There's a driver for the USB on the support website, but it only goes up to windows 98 and tells me I should use live update if I have xp, except this board doesn't have an internet card, and I don't have one laying around to plug into it so I've been burning stuff onto cds with my main computer if I want to put anything onto it (drivers, maintenance software, Everest, etc.), but I'm not sure if I should just go ahead and install the USB drivers from the support site. ?? When I plug a device into the back port they get power but I can't interface with them or vice versa. The 10-pins on the board don't appear to have a blank spot, so it looks like I'd break one of the pins if I tried to ram it in there. I don't know much at all about BIOS's so I haven't tried anything with it. I DLed the BIOS from the support site, but am not sure what to do with it, or how to update my BIOS.

That's the page, exactly. I have SP2 installed, yes. I can't seem to find a version for the BIOS with Everest, I just see "System BIOS date 11/30/01".

The last was 3.7 (10-22-2002)

Those drivers ask for 3.3 (or later)

Next time you boot enter BIOS Setup and see if you can find your version.

Flashing is no big deal but if you don't need to ...

As to USB: are you saying there is a "block" on the 10th pin? Usually it is just blank.

This is weird... the computer boots up so fast that I can't see any of the information that displays upon boot up, and it doesn't give me a chance to go into a pre-windows setup. Isn't it F2? I can't halt the boot of windows, because I don't know how in this case.

There are ten pins sticking out. The plug coming from the front of the case has 9 holes in it. Where the tenth pin would go there is NOT a hole. There IS a set of pins toward the back of the board that I could just reach with the length of cord that I have that I CAN and DID plug into, but it didn't do anything. What I understand to be the main sets of pins for USB (there are 3 clusters very close to each other at the bottom of the board) are as I described above.

From the manual:

Entering Setup
Power on the computer and the system will start POST (Power On
Self Test) process. When the message below appears on the screen, press
<DEL> key to enter Setup.
DEL:Setup F11:Boot Menu F12:Network boot TAB:Logo
If the message disappears before you respond and you still wish to
enter Setup, restart the system by turning it OFF and On or pressing the
RESET button. You may also restart the system by simultaneously pressing
<Ctrl>, <Alt>, and <Delete> keys.

You should also be able to hit "Pause" during the quick post to freeze the screen. The BIOS version should be on the first screen.
