help! no sound!
hi,
i think my sound stopped working when i installed a dvd player. i am running windows 2000 on a fujitsu n3010 life book.
i have tried re-installing drivers, deleting the device and letting windows detect it again, but to no avail.
i found this in the conflicts/shared directory.
could this be it?

Hello, and Welcome to D-A-L.
I'd say yes, so many things on IRQ7 could be a problem. Display, Modem, Ethernet, Sound, USB,,,,,,,,,,
Do you have any control on IRQ selection on some of these devices? Specifically the SigmaTel C-Major Audio and your modem. See what IRQ's are free (if any) and move the sound and modem devices to one or more of these.

thanks for your help.
i have tried to change irq's, however i have not been successful. how would you change irq's in windows 2000?

It's basically a device, or, it's drivers, that will allow this. (That's why I asked; "Do you have any control on IRQ selection on some of these devices?")
If you have no control, then your Win2000 has been installed following the ACPI hardware structure. This means the system (the machine hardware, and the installed O/S, (which together comprise your HAL)) control the IRQ steering. If all your devices are PnP, then the manufacturer of that device has determined the IRQ, and the ACPI/IRQ steering handles it.
The two most common devices which allow any leeway are the modem and sound device. But if you can't change them, they are PnP.
The only way to gain more control is to change the HAL type to Standard PC from ACPI. To do this, Windows must be reinstalled. (A "Repair" or "Upgrade" installation.)
However, this may cause other problems. It has to be done a certain way or you may make your system unusable. In which case you would have to perform a complete destructive, clean install. See; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/Q237556 <=== This is important to read if you contemplate changing the HAL. Don't let anybody tell you to "just change things in Device Manager". (Which I have seen advised on the net. Beware.)
The only other way is if any of these devices are peripheral cards in PCI etc slots. Changing a card to a different slot may assist. (From the looks of your listed device names though, I'd say most were "onboard" devices.
Is there an element of the DVD players software that overlaps one of these other devices? Media perhaps?
