this is the trouble i'm having, getting an OS, any OS, win98 or xp actually onto the 80gb.
Every time i run setup ( thru windows, which sees the 80gb ), i get to a black screen after putting my codes in,saying sumat like,: WINDOWS XP, or WINDOWS SETUP.
If i choose windows it either loads windows normaly or runs over the 7gb.
If i choose setup, i get an error message like " can't complete setup, 'windows root >\system32\hal.dll missing or corrupted "
It's like the pc can see the 80gb ( as in the pic ), but can't see it at setup???
and if i remove the 7gb it won't fire up at all
I went back to Seagate/Maxtor and the closest I could get to this drive (given the specs) was it's in the Barracuda family.
In any case, all of the above may be moot. Jumpering (most) MAXTOR/Seagate drives is easy.
J-50 ON = Master
J-50 OFF = Slave
(J-50 will be silkscreened onto the logic board on the underside of the disk, so it's fairly easy to identify.)
2) "but in the BIOS it says ' Primary drive - Auto -EIDE Drive 65535..."
"Primary drive - Auto" setting is a good sign. Is there a (tiny) jumper on the disks logic board (bottom of the disk) for "Limit capacity to 64MB"?
Also ensure that two hard disks (or CD/DVD drives) on the same cable are not BOTH SET to Master or Slave. This causes drive recognition problems. (The CS setting is fine, however you need an 80 conductor/40 Pin cable for this to work. A 40 conductor/40 Pin cable will not support this function. With this setting, the "Master" disk/drive has to be on the end of the cable, and the Slave on the middle connector.)
Once all the jumper settings are ironed out, I suggest testing the disk with the Seatools Diagnostics to ensure it's integrity before wasting any more time on it.
3) "Also, on the 80gb E: drive, at the bottom there's 2 check boxes. One is not ticked ( compress drive to save disk space )??
If i tick this will it convert to Fat32?"
No. It will compress the volume. Stay away from that. Especially for NTFS; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907870/en-us (Note how recent this is, August 29,2007) Compressing drives (Volumes) is more trouble than it's worth.
"The other is ticked ( allow indexing for fast searching)."
This is just the indexing service. It allows faster searches/finds.
"One last thing, sorry to go on, but when i start in DOS with a win 98 bootdisk and fdisk, the pc sees any 'good' hd, but it can't see the 80gb, it says 'no fixed disk present'??"
You probably have an old fdisk, which limits drive recognition to 64GB. Your 98 bootdisk may be old too.
Delete the "old" fdisk.exe from the boot floppy and copy the new fdisk to the boot floppy.
"I thought i had to be in Dos to run fdisk..."
No. Fdisk can be run within the Windows (98) environment. It will just open a Command window and run fine.
"So now i need to get XP onto the 80gb E:, but i'm stalled.Everytime i try run the cd it tries to overwrite the 7gb!!"
Physically disconnect the 7GB hard disk when doing a fresh install.
A word about file systems;
"All our machines are not networked, they're all stand alone pc's in various rooms and are not connected to my pc at all, ( the main 40gb 'net pc ).We share files through floppy, cdrom, etc."
A file is a file is a file. It's just Bit's_N_ Bytes. Ones and Zeros. No matter what file system it resides on FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, LINUX, etc, it's still: Ones and Zeros.
When it's copied/moved to another file system, it takes up the attributes/file_system_structure of the "new" file system. It's still Ones and Zeros. Moving from a FAT32 file system to a CD, it becomes a CDFS structured file. When it's copied to an NTFS machine, the Ones and Zeros come under the NTFS structure. Still Ones and Zeros.
Hi Dan,thanks for the info, muchly apreciated, and i don't mind anyone putting their advice in, and as always thanks BD as well
Update - I seem to have a phobia with ntfs since i had trouble with a machine a few years ago, eventually stripping it and binning what was left.So in a moment of fedupness, i had another go at this pc -
In 'computer managment' i deleted the 80gig partition and split it into 3 partitions, 30gb, 30gb, and nearly 18gb FAT32 ( see pic, all fat32 ).
Then i managed to install my XP pro ( pic, fat32 xp pro ) onto the 30gb E:\ ( but i forgot how i did this now, it was late friday, few beers, kids dodgy/injured hand etc! so i left it all weekend ).
So now, when i boot the machine ( with the 7gb and 80gb in ), the black screen comes up with boot from xp pro/80gb or xp home/7gb, so i can get into the 80gb at last! It seems to work ok so far, but before i split the 80gb the pc couldn't see it if i removed the 7gb, maybe now it will, that's my next step - ( as the wife's changed my pc table for a huge new Ikea mikael jobby 'puter table and i've had to dismantle both pc's , typical...)

What is this J-50 / silkscreen thing you speak of ?!
" Is there a (tiny) jumper on the disks logic board (bottom of the disk) for "Limit capacity to 64MB"? "
erm, ??!
" Also ensure that two hard disks (or CD/DVD drives) on the same cable are not BOTH SET to Master or Slave. "
The 7gb is on the end of the cable, the 80gb in the middle.
"Physically disconnect the 7GB hard disk when doing a fresh install."
As i said, as an NTFS drive, the pc wouldn't boot.
Now ( as a FAT32 drive ),it sees the 80gb, and boots into the 30gb E: drive

hmm, suddenly it is getting clearer, thanks for the explanation
p.s, sorry for huuuuuge pics,
anyone know where i can d/load a good picture resizer?
Silkscreenig is the (usually white) printing on circuit boards. On the logic board (on the bottom) of this hard disk J50 or maybe just 50 will be printed on the circuit board in line with the (jumper) pin 50 (at the rear end) of the disk.
" Is there a (tiny) jumper on the disks logic board (bottom of the disk) for "Limit capacity to 64MB"? "
erm, ??!
See attached pic of logic board.
"As i said, as an NTFS drive, the pc wouldn't boot. Now ( as a FAT32 drive ),it sees the 80gb, and boots into the 30gb E: drive"
Quick update,
there's no 'limit to 64mb jobby on the disk.
I've tried the pc with just the 80gb in and it don't work.
If i put the 7gb on the IDE cable it works, booting to a black screen with 2 options, both the same (xp pro).If i choose top xp it boots to the 30gb part of the 80gb, so the 80gb must work.
If i choose the second xp, it boots to the 7gb.
Like i said before,it's only an old disk and pc to mess around with, store data, but i'll be chuffed if i can get the 80gb to boot without his piggyback buddy mr 7gb.
Am gonna try test the 80gb with the 'hard disk tool' ( http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 ) cheers.
The pic is of the pc running in the 30gb part ( e:\ ) on the 80gb, i hope!!
