I need some advice on comparing processors. basically i have a software requirement of (suggested) p4 3ghz and am wondering what this equates to in terms of laptop processors in particular 'pentium m' and 'pentium dual core'

many thanks in advance for any help

this might not be right but ill have a go.

Pentium m 780 = 2.26ghz dont think they do any higher
Intel core 2 extreme QX6850 = 3.0 ghz think this is the highest

    hope this has helped you

Thanks for that. I have more information available. Basically i have seen a hp laptop with a pentium m 1.73ghz (795mhz) with 512gb ram. I have the option of try before i buy and am thinking with a ram upgrade will suffice.

    regards

Thats not that bad, (guessing 512mb ram). Looks like quite a good laptop.

There are very few software programs with a suggested system requirement of 3Ghz - except for the latest games.

In spite of what some people and laptop makers tell you, laptops do not make good game machines. Period.

So if the software program you are planning to use is one of the latest 3D animated games, it is not likely you will be too thrilled with the game play on that laptop - especially if only 512Mb of RAM. And since all but the most advanced laptops use on-board graphics, your system RAM will be reduced as the system takes 64-128Mb of RAM away and uses it for graphics. This then puts a much greater demand on the hard drive as the OS and CPU will be forced to use the virtual memory of the page file much more often - and of course, that will slow down performance too.

Do note that heat problems plague laptops (and games are very demanding)and heat will certainly cause the CPU to toggle down in speed - which of course affects game play even more.

The machine in question is to be used for djing using numark cue 5.0. Numark recommend p4 3ghz with 1gb ram.

I have just been evaluating the software on a less powerful machine (p4 1.5ghz 256mb ram) and did experience a few minor problems but only when trying to multitask.

This software plays mp3 as well as mp3+g, running in dual screen mode, and thats all it is going to do.

thanks to you all for the advice
im sure more questions will follow

    regards
    Dave
