    Help I might have killed our den PC ...

    Pulling out the den pc from desk i accidently hit the power supply on off button, the pc was on at the time and turned off, hit power button back on position and hit front power button, pc tries to boot, gets past the text screens where it shows cdrom and hard drives etc, then to the normaly brief black screen before the windows logo, yet at this point it just "stalls" and nothing happens.

    I let it sit for like 30 mins nothing but black screen.

    Tried installing the xp disc (pent 3 800 homebuilt on asus board and antec case), thought it might boot to cdrom and offer a repair option but nothing, just gets back to the black screen part and sits. (yes genuine valid MS XP Pro disc).

    I even tried ESC to enter setup (screen said that at bottom) but nogo, even tried F8, F11, and a few other keys during the bootup hoping maybe something would happen.

    I wasnt IN the case and wasnt rough with it nor did I bump it around just accidently shut it down by powersupply on off.

    I can see the monitor is on but at that black screen, fans all going, hd lights on, heck it seems to ALMOST start up (all normal till the very last part of bootup where windows logo comes on).

    At this point I am stumped, can the on off of back of powersupply possibly fry the computer or something?

    What else can I check or do or try?

    Thanks for any help, daughter uses this for webkinz, wife uses it for email etc, (keeps them off mine here hehe) so would like to know what if anything else i could try to fix this.

    Normally this is where I'd suggest;

    Boot the machine with your XP CD.

    If/when you're told to "Press any key to boot from CD", hit the Space bar.

    At the 'Welcome to Setup' screen, press r for Repair.

    When the machine is done loading, type in;

    Chkdsk /f

    When it's fininshed, try booting normally.

    If it still won't boot, repeat the above, this time type in;

    Fixmbr

    However it appears you can't get into the bios to ensure the CDROM is the first boot device.

    Try unplugging it from the wall and let it sit for a minute or two. Then plug it back in and try a boot. Also try entering the bios again.

    When I pressed any key to try to get it to boot from cd nothing would happen, and it would just sit in limbo at a black screen - so that is where i got stuck yesterday.

    I tried again today, it still wasn't responding (said hit any key i was hitting keys nothing happening), so I thought let me just try something, swapped keyboard with another one and tried one more time this time it TOOK and allowed me to hit repair, that took a good 20 mins or so then it restarted loaded windows fine and all was good.

    Restarted machine with her old keyboard in place machine does not respond to her keyboard, so put the other one on there again and bam it worked again, so must be a fluke or she spilled something in there daddy didnt know about hehe..

    Only thing I can maybe thing (longshot) is the old keyboard is ps2, maybe the power out thing messed up the ps2 hole, cuz the replacement keyboard i used is usb who knows its an older pc anyways but it works now so thats a huge relief vs having to go get a new one.

    I rebooted a few times with a new keyboard on there all was good.

    Thanks for the help and replies, glad to have found out switching a $15 keyboard fixed it vs switching the whole thing out.
