    Hard drive not detected

    Hi,

my friend was having some problems with her computer so I had a look at it, when turning it on, it was failing to run windows. It failed to detect the hard drive and both cd drives. When I ran the setup, the only boot device available was the floppy drive.
This happened all of a sudden when she moved into a new flat, it had been working fine previously.
I tried the hard drive on my computer but it didnt detect it either, I have ran out of ideas im afraid!

Any advice would be appreciated, esp if the files &pics etc from the hard drive could be saved!

    Thanks in advance,

    Tony

    Hi and welcome to D-A-L

    are all the connection OK?

in the BIOS does it show the hard drive and CD drives?

when you tried it on your machine was the jumper on the back set right?

    Hi, thanks for the welcome!

Yeah the connections are fine and the jumpers for hd and cd drives are set correctly.

BIOS does not detect any drive other than the floppy.

It was working fine until recently, nothing had been changed before it stopped detecting the drives.

remove the IDE connections from the motherboard (be careful with ESD) then reconnect just a CD Rom and see if that's detected.

do the CD Roms light up when the machine is powered?
