Cannot copy.Cannot read fromsource file or disk

I'm attempting to transfer programmes/files from my old pc to my "new" setup by copying them to a cd-rw disk. I have tried to install them from the cd-rw disk to my "new" pc using control panel > add new programmes, without any success. An 'error window' opens with the message Application Error
'The application failed to initialize properly (0x0000006). Click on OK to terminate the application'. I have also attempted to copy and paste by using the 'explore' facility: - Highlight programme folder > select "Copy this folder" from the 'File and Folder' task > Select location where file is to be copied in 'Copy items' window then click copy button. Error message window, 'Cannot copy. Cannot read from source file or disk'
The cd drive doesn't have any problems autoplaying audio cds' etc.

I'd be grateful for any advice.

I doubt you'll be able to transfer programmes from one machine to the other.

what programmes are you trying transfer?

Is the operating system the same?

Thank you for a swift response

I'm trying to copy/transfer Symantec Antivirus and Lavasoft Adaware 2007 as well as some others which I installed on my old pc. Both pc's were using Windows XP Pro. I hope that helps.

Yes, both Symantec and adaware programmes were the subscribed and paid for versions. I have to disconnect one pc to access the other and it grieves me to be able to download all updates on the old pc yet can't install them, for whatever reasons on my 'new' set up. I have installation cds' for the other programmes which I have had no problem with.

if you have the product key can you download them to the new machine and do the updates?.

it could be the licence you have is for 1 machine only

I have installed the free version of ad aware. I attempted to use the key to download the full version but it had expired even though my license doesn't expire until April 08. I've sent an e-mail to them with my order number etc requesting them to supply me with a new key to re-instate the full version.
I probably need to do something similar with Symantec AV.

    Thank you

Thanks for your prompting and other info 'brain damage'.
Success. Great response from Lavasoft. They have agreed to reset my license agreement after sending my order details etc.

My next task is to find the D-A-L posting which I read some time ago with advice on configuring the software.

I've found this, I've got it saved on my PC I think Neal original wrote it

    Adaware SE 1.06

Adaware SE is a very customizable program and we suggest you set it up like the following procedure:
(Even if you already have Adaware SE please set it up like the below)

Once it's downloaded double click on the new file to start the install process.Click Next>I accept>Next>Next> then be sure and put a dot in the bullet for Anyone Who uses this computer and then click Next>Next>.

In the next dialog box remove the dot in the bullets "Start Scan" and also "Launch Help Files" and click Finish

Now if the program doesn't launch double click on the icon that should now be on your desktop to start AdAware SE.

Now click on the button for Check for Updates.
If updates are found click on the OK button and after it downloads to 100%, click on the Finish button.

    Click the Start Button.
Click on the link for Customize in the Main Window under Scan Settings
Click on the red X in front of Scan within archives to change it to a green check

Then click on the button on the left labeled Advanced
click on the red X in front of Move deleted files to Recycle Bin to change it to a green check

Click on the red X in front of Include Environment Information to change it to a green check

Then click on the button on the left labeled Defaults
click on the Read current settings from system.

Then click on the button on the left labeled Tweak
Click on the (+) in front of Scanning Engine to expand the group
click on the red X in front of Obtain Command line of scanned processes to change it to a green check.

Click on the red X in front of Run scan as background process to change it to a green check.

Click on the red X in front of Use permanent archive caching to change it to a green check

Click on the (+) in front of Cleaning Engine to expand the group, click on the red X in front of Disable manual quarantine if auto-quarantine is selected to change it to a green check

Click on the (+) in front of Log File to expand the group
click on the red X Create Log File for removal operations to change it to a green check

Click on the (+) in front of User Interface to expand the group.Click on the red X Remember window positions to change it to a green check

Click on the red X Snap windows to desktop borders to change it to a green check,

Click on the red X Use gridlines in results list to change it to a green check

Click on the (+) in front of Web Update Settings to expand the group.Click on the red X Create and save WebUpdate log file to change it to a green check

Click on the (+) in front of Misc settings to expand the group
click on the red X Dump details about unhandled exceptions to disk to change it to a green check.

Then click on the button at the bottom right labeled Proceed then click the Next button to start scanning.

Once the scan is complete you'll have a flashing Bug and a brief sound to indicate scanning is complete and Adware is found. Click on the Next and then click on each of the empty boxes to the left of the found items under SCAN

SUMMARY. Then hit the Next button. Then OK. This should clean your system of all the found nasties. When it's complete simply close the program until your next scan session. Always ALWAYS check for updates before very scan. Reboot after each scan as somethings will be deleted upon reboot.

Thank you b-d. That is definitely the write up I was looking for.

My apologies for the late response but as you can see from my latest post I have another problem which I have been struggling with for almost the same length of time.
